what would PCGS grade this circ. Walker?

DennisHDennisH Posts: 13,990 ✭✭✭✭✭
Is grading circulated Walkers as hard as it seems to be? VG and Fine coins strike me as being pretty darn attractive much of the time, but I'm having a LOT of trouble locating whatever it is PCGS graders look at to decide whether a coin is VG, Fine or VF.

Here's a raw coin I just bought at my club meeting as a VG+. My gut reaction was it's better... but I don't know what the coin has that makes me think that. Can someone give me a few pointers? (The coin is natural circulated dirty-grey in color; totally original and uncleaned. I boosted the contrast on the scan to show details better.)

What do you think this coin would grade?
What makes it better than the next grade down?
What does it lack to be the next grade up?

Thanks very much for your help!

When in doubt, don't.

  • High F...close to VF. If the bust line was full, I'd go VF. Looks cleaned, but that may just be the way the picture is...
Definitely better than VG on the technicals
  • Fine.. but a nice one

This is a F-15, by the old standards. I don't know what PCGS would call it, but to make VF (again, by the old standards), the detail must be complete underneath the bust.

    I'd call it a 20.

Coin is a solid F-15 IMO, in fact many people would call VF. I think the coin is close, but the reverse is just a tad weak in my eyes for a 20.
