What are everyones thoughts on psa graded cards that are being sold for a large $$ premium's..you know, when a dealer tells you "WEll its a HIGH END 7or 8" and charges far more than SMR, The grade system in my opinion regulates card conditions so people dont have to get rinsed when making a purchase on a card (like everyone has in the past on a raw, so called nm/mint card)....should
PSA start throwing in half grades?????

A premium to what? The market drives the price. If the seller keeps listing at those prices, then he's probably realizing those prices, hence that's what the card is worth. The Standard Card Catelog lists the NM 1960 Venezuelan Yaz at $550, for those who have them, I'll pay 110%. Conversely, there are SMR prices that I'd only pay 50%.
I like half grades that's why I use SGC for more grade sensitive or pre-WWII issues. I don't see PSA doing this anytime soon, there are many previous threads on this subject.
PSA doesn't need to go to half-grades. Rather, your dealer should go to hell. If he wants a premium over SMR, you have to decide whether or not it's worth it to you. Population reports can help. According to every person out there, their card is a 7++++++. If the card was that excellent, wouldn't the dealer spend 10 bucks to send it back to PSA for a regrade with a large potential upside?
So, next time you hear the high end nonsense, tell your dealer to zip it. Go in knowing what cards you want are worth by checking Ebay sales. That way you are prepared to put out a final price and stand by it.
Also, don't fall for the old "I got overhead and these teenage geeks to pay". Dealers are rarely in a card for more than 65 percent of the SMR.
The one thing I've learned is a card will always re-appear if you pass (Unless it's some crazy, hard issue from 1899 that was hand drawn). You might have to be patient, but via Ebay and the internet, you can always find the same card again. If you feel like you have to have it, shell out the dough. We've all been there. But follow trends because issues become hot and cool off. A card that might sell for 3 times book today could sell for half of book in six months.
Good luck,
Scumbi
Hope this helps.
