Premium paid...Was it worth it? I paid a premium of...

I picked up this Morgan a couple weeks ago. I know I paid over the current published fare market value.
But I love the toning.

......I paid a premium of about 2.7 x FMV which equalled about $113.00.

Some may say that this is way too much for this coin. Exceptionally toned coins have been realizing unbelievable premiums lately.I watched a auction close recently on a common Morgan with above average toning that had a FMV of about $110.00. It sold for over $500.00. So what is fair market value on toned coins? I think a coin that has beautiful natural toning is like a fine piece of art and its value is in the eyes of the beholder.

Would you pay a premium for this coin?

  • I guess it depends on what the "premium" is/was ?

Depends on what you payed. I personally would pay a slight premium if a coin is nicely toned and catches my eye.

I would most certianly pay a premium for a toned coin....

as to how high a premium, it depends on how I gauge the toning...

I bet that coin's super nice in hand. For a 63 81s I don't think I'd go in the triple digits, but I'm more of a fan of PL morgans than toners.

So, time now for you to tell us what you paid.
  • Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Toned coins (NT, that is, not AT) are commanding a premium right now over sheet pricing and depending on the market and marketeer, my threshold is from 'back of bid' (naturally...) to approximately 4X sheet price.
So far during this crazy booming market I've only had to pass up a few amazing finds.

Nice coins command a premium, whether they are toned or not.
I have paid many multiples over published prices for coins I deem truly special (like my icon coin). Everybody has their opinion or comfort level when paying premiums for toning, and the bottom line is if you are comfortable with your purchase, then who cares what anyone thinks! JMHO.image

I would pay a big premium for that coin.

  • The few awesome-toned coins I have, and have paid a premium for, are the
very coins that I get the most pure enjoyment from. When I want to look
at or share my coins, these are the pieces that I invariably pull out.

  • Sure, I'd pay more for a coin that looks like that one. I guess the grade wouldn't matter as much t me as the eye appeal. That one sure is nice!

judging from that picture? I might roll the dice for a modest premium (20 to 50%) to see the coin up close.

If I was looking at it in hand or with a better photo and liked what I saw I would pay maybe 2X bid.

Need to see it better but looks like a 100 buck coin retail. 75 bucks wholesale.

But would really need to see the real coin.

Then it is unlikely that you will be able to acquire truly nice toned coins.

If this is a statement that you prefer blast white coins and eshew toned coins, then it is a statement of preference and is not responsive to the question raised by the originator of this thread.

If this is an attempt to give advice to the effect that it is not prudent to pay a premium for toning under any circumstances, then it is truly one of the more clueless pieces of advice that has been given here in a while, since following it as a general rule will preclude the acquisition of nice toned coins, unless you get lucky enough to rip a coin from someone who doesn't know its worth.

it's a $20 coin no matter how you look at it. any extra $$$ is going toward the plastic - a poor value-added for a $20 coin.

    So what was the premium?
(You can say that your friend's brother bought one just like and HE paid the premium...)

it's a $20 coin no matter how you look at it. I bet that coin would sell for far, far more than $20, regardless of where and how you sold it. So what was the premium paid for it??

LOOKS LIKE A PRETTY NICE COIN, FOR THE MONEYimage
    toner loner
  • You'll never see me paying a premium for toned coin!image
  • That is a very large premium for a common date Morgan (most common date in the series) in that grade, toned or not. For that price, you could have bought a nicely toned MS65 ($110 - $130). I see hundreds of them on various sites all day long.

  • Nice coin but you gotta becareful of artificial toning. Make your own Target toned coins! Just store it in a paper envolope for a few years image. It really depends on the materials the paper is made out of, and of course people don't want to wait long to get their own.
