Liberty Nickel collectors - NGC vs. PCGS in gem and higher grades...

Hi, Everybody -

In grades like MS/PR 65, 66, and 67, do you see major differences in the quality of PCGS-graded coins vs. NGC-graded coins? How about when it comes to the cameo designation?

  • Yes, I have 9 Liberty Head nickels graded by NGC as proof 68 or 68 Cameo, and the only Liberty Head nickel graded proof 69 graded by either service. Only four of the 10 -- the Proof 69 (which Jon Rosenthal at RCNH recently upgraded to cameo for me), and three of the proof 68s -- really, really deserve the grade. The others are glorious coins, but just a trifle of chatter often in the fields, disqualifies them (in my eyes) as 68s.

Of course some of PCGS Liberty Heads I see in 6 and 7 holders (MS and/or Proof) don't deserve the grade either, but the ratio is higher for the NGC slabs.

Regarding Cameo, I think PCGS is stricter about the reverse than NGC.

    Best wishes,

it all depends on a coin by coin basis with the specific coin in the specific holder

some are monster eye appealing crazy coins and solid to high end for the grades others are not as such

buy the coin not the holder

I don't see a big difference between NGC and PCGS in the Liberty nickels. I have 2 PF65 1910's. The PCGS one nice and flashy with some cameo. There seems to be some heavy die pollishing under the ear though. The NGC coin is toned with reds in the fields. Liberty's face is perfect with no hairlines, marks, or wierd die pollish.

Hey (Just Having Fun), I saw your PF69 nickel at the FUN show just before it went back for a cam review. It looked pretty nice.

With these nickels, just how much cam is needed to get the cameo designation?
