1964 SMS coins... Your best guess at what they'll auction for.

Heritage has three 1964 SMS coins for auction. What do you think will be the final hammer price for each?

1. 1964 PCGS 5c SMS MS68 FS
2. 1964 PCGS 25c SMS MS67
3. 1964 NGC 50c MS69

A couple of years ago it was estimated that 20 sets existed. Now it is estimated that there are more like 50. Who says that there are no rare moderns?

OldCameoProofGuy, That's a fascinating number. Where did you hear that estimate?

How are they determined (identified) to be SMS?

The half dollar description Link has an estimated number mentioned. I think that looking at the most recent pop numbers they are pretty much on track.

I think the previous 1964 SMS NGC MS69 Kennedy went for about $9,600-9,700. last year. I was the underbidder and got sniped at the last minute. Not by you-know-who, either. I could have sworn it was a pop 1 at the time and this is not a recent slab.

I believe I bought the entire 1964 SMS set, including the nickel in MS68FS, the quarter in MS67, the half in MS67, the cent in MS65RD and the dime in MS68 at 11/03 NY Heritage sale for around $22k with the commish. Yes, that was a good deal image

I will say that for such a low mintage, they always seem to be available.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

At the Baltimore July 2003 Signature sale, Lot #8104, 1964 SMS NGC MS69 Kennedy realized $10,637.50 ($9,250 winning bid+++).
