To post images or not -- a DEALER wants to know?

Thanks to a large and varied inventory, I am in a position to regularly post images of some extraordinarily cool coins on this forum. I have been rather reluctant to do so because of the criticism on the part of some board members for what they perceive as dealer self promotion. The few times that I have posted images, they were of coins that for the most part were either sold or already promised to a customer. In one instance, a board member PM'd me in regard to the availability of a dollar that I posted so I PM'd him back and told him that the piece was on currently hold but I would let him know if the status changed. About a week later I PM'd him and told him that the coin was now available and a short time later he was complaining on this forum about dealers promoting the sale of their coins by posting images. To be honest, I felt like I was set up. I am very interested in anyone's thoughts on this matter.
Thanks,
Mike

I`m sure you had the best of intentions in this case and I`m not aware of what this situation is about. On the other hand, it isn`t too far of a leap for the person crying foul. Not knowing all the facts, I`m assuming it was a misunderstanding. So it`s a fuzzy grey area there. Selling, well I don`t think it will still go down well as someone may cry foul again but, I can be wrong. In ant case, I don`t have a problem with ones that are already sold.
I would say if you have something unique and lovely then post the picture.
If someone wants to know about the coin then they will contact you.

The BST Forum is for eBay sales only.
Coins for sale that are not listed on eBay are posted in the Registry Forum.
The US Coin Forum is now the Open Forum

Wah! Wah! Wah!
Funny how some complainers will do this unless it works for them.
I'm all for pictures, if it something I like of course I'm going to inquire as to its availablity. I appreciate the opportunity to see new coins for sale or not. We don't have the best coin shops in this area so it's through this medium that I can find coins that interest me. Not everyone on the BST board post pictures anyway. I say go ahead and post 'em.
Of course not!
You should have called this person out, we tend to turn the other cheek too many times.
If you feel set up, then clear the air then & there. Members are smart enough, they AMAZE me at the effort they put into getting to the bottom of an issue......just don't get into religion or politics!!!
AND you can try to sell em if you want as far as i'm concerned, it's no biggie
have never really gotten what all the fuss is about

No offense to russ or andrian......just those are two names on this board who have great coins and great pics.

I love nice coin photos as much as anyone, but if a coin that is for sale can be posted here only because it's cool, we could easily end up the BST forum for high-end dealers. There would be no way to draw the line or to judge whether the poster's motivation was altruistic or not.
At first everything would be fine. Then we'd see more and more photos being posted because more dealers (not necessarily dealers who are here today) would want to get their product in front of this type of audience. Then there would be a backlash from board members saying it's gotten out of hand. Then the moderators would have to step in and issue a ruling that coins for sale MUST go on the BST board - or worse, saying that no dealers can post photos due to abuse. I think we'd be better off skipping all that commotion and potential hard feelings and self-police ourselves.
I appreciate getting to see great coins I'll never be able to own, but I have a much better perception of the dealer when I know it's not being done to sell the coin. Coins for sale belong on the BST board.
Regarding the specific situation you mentioned, I understand why you might feel you were set up. I guess the only way to protect yourself against that is to wait until the coin has been placed.
On a side note, I see nothing wrong with having links in signatures.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

"He" sounds like he might need to get a life! Nice pix of nice coins are very much a big part of what makes the forums fun for many. Post!

I'm against it personally and I'm a dealer. This could become a giant yahoo group if it went unchecked.

beautiful coins. However, such an action could very quickly lend itself to abuse which would
then be very hard to control. The backlash would be detrimental to dealers and collectors alike
as the character of this Forum would be changed. Coins that have already been sold would be
permissable or coins shown for the sole purpose of education or grading clarification would probably be
OK.

I would say that if dealers do choose to post images of coins that are for sale, there should be added value such as a learning point. make it educational.
<< <i>
<< <i>However, it drives me nuts everytime one major dealer poster on here (yep, thats a direct shot) keeps doing it and acting like its for education. >>
Laura:
Correct me if I am wrong but the major dealer you are talking about only uses coins that have already been sold in his posts.
You on the other hand consistently break the BST board rules of posting and TTT your own thread by telling us your NEWPS are being posted soon. Then you post a few hours later that they are still coming. This does not include the 2 threads at one time you put up the other day, another No No. The rules are one TTT per day on the BST board and only one thread within the first page.
Just wanted to say this as it seems no one else wants to point it out. >>
AMEN!!!!!!!!!!!!
<< <i>The BST board can be very effective. Some dealers need to learn that. >>
Maybe certain dealers that aren't hyping silver dollars in not one but TWO threads (that don't even contain any coins for sale) need to learn some etiquette.
Continually throwing your cheap shots at Coinguy certainly is becoming of a well-known national dealer. Your posts I would imagine sure are effective. Effectively keeping people from Legend.
