Off topic...Soccer Made in Germany

For those of you between the ages of 30-45, you may remember this program on PBS broadcast
every Saturday afternoon when you were a kid.

Toby Charles was the announcer of a one hour game from Germany featuring teams like
Bayern Munich, Schalke, Stuttgart, and others.

There is a guy on ebay named olafthon1 that sells these games. I have bought
many tapes off of him for $10.00 a game. He lives in Maryland and is very polite
and great to deal with. He also has every world cup game ever played since the 1950's.
So if you're into the world cup, you will love his selection.

Sorry to post this on this board, but I was a big fan of this program, and thought I might mention
it in case someone else was.

Thanks for the heads up. I'm 45 years old and still play organized soccer. It's a great game that keeps you in shape. I hope I can still play another 5 years.

So what kind of tapes are these? Are they just bootlegs straight from the PBS broadcast or licensed tapes from the league? Just curious.

I remember back in U.S.A. 1994 World Cup. U.S.A. played Columbia and one of the columbian players scored in his own net! I believe it was an accident, however, because he scored in his own net, Columbia failed to make the playoffs. And I also believe that he was murdered when he returned to his home country - Columbia.

Do you have any information on this subject, Marc? Do you think the seller has this game on VHS or DVD?

Andres Escobar is the player of whom you're thinking, Ranch. I couldn't remember if it was an own goal or just a botched defensive play, but that link had all the information.

I used to love Soccer Made in Germany and wish it were still on since I don't have Fox Sports World. I prefer the F.A. Premier League, though.

What was the world cup that had England in it, somewhere around '66? I was a little kid then but my family had just moved here and I remember my parents going nuts in the house during the game. I'd love to get my mom the tape.

    Thanks for the link, Steve.

If I ever get a chance, I still want to see this match. Some websites have this game on sale as high as $30! I don't know if I am willing to pay that amount...image

    Ranch-
I remember that story- I believe the player was killed by a mob when he got home. Can you imagine what they'd have done to Bill Buckner if they were Red Sox fans image
Honduras and El Salvador actually went to war over a World Cup qualifier in '69. And you thought Cub fans were hardcore.

'Twas indeed '66, Griffins. Geoff Hurst scored the first-ever Finals hat trick that game, which was also the first time the Finals went into extra time. I think it was also the last time England won the World Cup.

    Dude,

They are bootleg games from PBS.
Unfortunately, KQED didn't keep any copies of these games.
The only available games are from people who taped them.

I have the Bayern Munich 7 N.Y. Cosmos 1 game from Munich.
I used to go see the Cosmos a lot as a kid. It broke my heart
when I saw Rumminegge and company destroy them in Munich.
However, I quickly became a Bayern fan after that.

Olafton1 will also have that USA game that was mentioned here.
You will not have to pay more than $10.00 for it. image

Anyone here a fan of the old Major Indoor Soccer League???

Hell yeah! The Steamers seriously used to be second only to the Cardinals in terms of popularity. I used to love going to their games, but they could never win in the finals, losing to Steve Zungul and the Arrows at least twice and I think the Blast once.

Edited to add: Griffins, I noticed the other day that the FIFA World Cup site has streaming video of some classic World Cup matches, including the '66 Finals (no audio, though) and the '90 England-Cameroon match.
