Here is my setup from last night using the sheet of glass at about a 45 degree angle. As you can see, the OTT_Light is laying on it's side aimed at the angled glass. The camera shots were taken looking directly down onto the coin in macro mode. FWIW, I shoot freehanded as for me it allows more freedom of movement, and I have a steady trigger finger. image

This technique was mentioned on the Lightside as a way to shoot a non-elliptical jpeg and still get the vivid colours for those tough to image toners. As you can see (or will shortly) it also works FABULOUS for coppers too.

A caution: It can be used also shooting through slabs, i.e., plastic, but it will require brightness/contrast dickering or light angulation experimentation to remove the glare/haze from the image caused by the plastic.

Is that coin on the glass, or under it?

If you spent more time reading quality threads instead of that drivel on the Open Forum you would know the answer. There was a thread on the liteside about this photographic technique.

  • Those are greeat pix and really nice coins, Mouse!!

For the purple coppers I posted on another thread, I had a single reveal light above and in front of the coin and another reveal light from the side doing indirect light on the coins. The camera was on a tripod in super digital telephoto (since I don't have a steady hand and have to fend of the 2 year old when I am taking pix).
