3CN 1868 with clash marks.

One thing I forgot to mention about the Michigan Show was a neat die clashed 1868 3CN that I found but didn't buy. The seller had it listed as a BU for $75 while I saw the grade closer to an XF. Hard to imagine us being that far apart, but I based my estimate primarily on the abscence of luster. There was weak detail at the high points that I attributed to wear and I was wondering if that would have been at least partially due to some polidshing of the dies after the clashing took place??

As for the clash, it was quite dramatic on the reverse. You could see the entire outline of Liberty's profile, complete from forehead to chin, just outside of the numerals. More faint were traces of the back of her head on the opposite side of the reverse and a faint wreath outline on spots of the obverse. Is a strong impression like that common? Is this date noted for the clash marks that I saw?? What about price, was $75 too high as I assumed it was?? The seller came down to $65 and I countered at $50 which left him holding the coin and thinking for about 15 seconds till I politely thanked him and walked away.

Thanks.

  • It has been my experience that clash marks are quite common in three-cent nickels. It's not limited to 1868. Of course, it could be that the devices and open fields are aligned in such a way that the clash marks are more easily seen on this denomination.
The strangest things seem suddenly routine.
