  • apparently so. I may be coming by his way really soon.
  • REALLY soon.
  • Still no spoon. I could use his input. It looks like I'm imminently heading to Stuttgart for over a week and then to Karlsruhe... Karlsruhe apparently has a mint!

  • The contract is for 2 years. And it's not like they don't have the Internet in Germany. I'll probably be here as much as I ever have once I get settled.
  • Booked my flight today. Luckily I got a great price even on short notice.
  • Wow!imageimageimageimage

Just don't do this while in Germany...

Two years is a lot of time to discover Europe, congratulations on a smart decision.

  • I think it's a good decision, even though it was made quickly.
    • I've studied the ESL game and the best route for a newbie to get experience is with the chain schools. Of those chain schools Berlitz seems to be the most reputable, it was hard for me to find much criticism of it besides their Czech and Korean operations. Conversely other chains like Nova and GEOS, well, I've heard stories.
    • Another thing is that it's not the hiring season in Europe or Japan. Chain schools have an advantage in that this isn't a problem but it would be hard for me to get a job now at a private school and I don't want to wait around until September to work.
    • Private schools may offer more money but they demand at least 2 years of experience usually. I could do the two years with Berlitz and go on teaching or I could've found something else with my other part time work and continue with that.
    • I like Germany and I've wanted to go back for a long time. Karlsruhe seems pretty nice and has lots of deciduous trees which I miss so badly. The boss who I spoke with seems nice and has been very helpful so far.
    • Karlsruhe has a mint!!! (F mintmark)

I'm sure I won't "mention the war" as Basil Faulty would put it. North Americans view the whole Nazi thing with morbid fascination, while Germans find it [really, really, really] embarrassing. I knew a German in university and I was having breakfast with him while I was reading the paper and there was an article on a South Korean advertiser selling air conditioners with a cartoon Hitler saying "We will defeat heat on the cold front!" or something. I showed it to him and you could feel the humiliation he had. Nah, I won't be approaching that again.

By the way, it's interesting that you're campaigning for a foreigner....image

Phil, I just returned to Sweden today from five long but productive days in Germany. We drove from Kassel to Lund, Sweden in seven hours. We had the car up to 240 KPH on the autobahn until it began to rain. You'll love it over here. I have already made plans to come back in the near future to help catalog and photograph a very large Goetz collection. When do you take off?

  • The Kerry sig is just to be obnoxious. I thought it was funny and campy since it the image is offical Kerry propaganda.

I leave next Thursday and I'll be in Stuttgart on the 30th. I need to book accomodation pronto. I'll be happy with a safe hostel.

Doh! Sorry I missed this thread image

Yep, there's a mint in Karlsruhe image one here in Stuttgart too! F is Stuttgart, highest mintages in Germany.. G is Karlsruhe, with usually the lowest mintages. I still haven't been to either one though image From what I can tell they don't have walk-throughs? I dunno, we can just pop in when you're here if you want.

And, yeah.. don't mention the war! They're still sensitive about it, almost self-flagellating. The Brits piss them off a lot kraut bashing like that.. if you wanna kraut bash just call em gay and make fun of techno image (yeah, that's still a bad generalization, so what) Or if you really wanna get to them talk about how cool the Italians are.. I swear their entire neurosis is some kinda Italian envy. Let me stop now...

Oh, and I hope you're bringing a good camera.. really nice weather right now and there's all sorts of scenic stuff image
