    Does this look familiar?

Edited to say: Since nobody recognized the coin or its connection to this thread, here's a description from Mike Byers' site:

This is one of two known Pattern Decimal Crowns. It was struck on an Irish 10 Shilling Planchet with a lettered edge. The obverse depicts the design from the 10 Pence and the reverse has the Gothic Crown design from the 1847 Gothic Crown. From Spink in England and of the highest rarity.

  • It one of the most overvalued coin on ebay, I think. It is common to see it sell for >$20, which is crazy I think. The proofs are going for $50 in the last year. Nuts.
Although, I did just pay an aweful lot for a rare 10 shilling two-coin proof set. I'll post pictures when it gets here.

I have seen a single shilling as of late going for about $15.00. Right now on the bay of E there are about 6 anf the highest bid on one right now is about $9.00.

  • Mike,

I have been looking at those also. I just cannot seem to find one in UNC that I like (either too many marks or toned in a way that I do not care for). I may wait until I can find a really nice Proof.

I came across this nicely rim toned example on e-bay in an NGC holder. Pretty attractive to my eye.

  • Yeah I am watching that slabbed 10 shilling Greg is selling to see how it does because I have a nicer one that I am sending to NGC just for kicks. I think it will make MS68, and judging by the crazy prices these are realizing, it could sell for enough to put my unborn child through college. insanity

Oh wow....that much you think John????image
  • hard to say what the graders would give it, but it looks as good as a PCGS MS68 Silver American Eagle. There are no marks on it anywhere, no finger prints and it hasn't been cleaned, but it has a small black tarnish mark on one edge, very small. If I can get my scanner talking to my computer I'll post a picture.
Found it at a local coin store for $4 a few months ago.

If they're cheap to buy but sell well why not pick up a few and make a few dollars?

I have three. One is for my collection and goes great with the 1966 airport set I have, one I have for sale on ebay right now and the last one...well don't know yet it could end up in a Sunday swap image Outside of that I can't see having 15-20 of these coins unless you are going to sell them. They were made for only one year so there are no different varities of them and there are still plenty out there.
  • Well, there are two varieties, remember. The proofs have two different styles of writing around the rim so that one can be read when the obverse is facing up and the other can be read with the reverse facing up. This is only important for the 2-coin set shown below (whenever I can show this off I will!!) Not a big difference, and I have never seen any numbers on which is more common. By looking through my proofs I have two of each style, and my UNCs are both "OBV up".
