Can I call this the world's smallest coin?

I'd be interested in knowing if they come any smaller than this. The dime will give you scale-The ID is up to you.

If you have them as small or smaller, post 'em.

Do fanams also come in silver? I know of gold fanams.

COUNTRY: TRAVANCORE (INDIAN STATE), 1 Cash, about 1850, smallest machine-struck silver coin in the World.
I believe this is the coin-I am still doing research. I can't believe I didn't measure the size- the dime shown is 17.99 mm-the small coin has to be in the neighborhood of 5 or 6mm.

  • I have one that is real tiny...looks to be identified as belonging to the Malabar Coast of India from the 1700's. I don't know anything else about it yet, as I have not had time to investigate much yet. Looks to be about 9 mm in diameter.

I think I remember meLord saying the fanams being about 7-8 mm in diameter. Personally, I don't know.

The coin in Mac's link is indeed the smallest coin I've ever seen or heard of. Five milimeters is about as large as the tiny light on your keyboard.

I'm not sure about silver, but small gold is suitable if you're attacked by thieves. If you are attacked, you swallow the coins and a few days later they come out at the other end image

I don't know about the thieves' part, but gold fanams were meant to be carried in the mouth,
or that's what I've been told. Clothes of the time didn't have pockets anyway.

Pictured next to a penny. LM has still a few available I believe, and a very good deal too. image

  • The Nepalese jawa is the world's smallest coin as far as I know. It was only struck on one occasion in the late 1700. It is made of silver or gold (both types exist) and is struck on a square flan which is 4 milimeters on both sides. The weight is around 0.01 gram. The Nepalese actually cut some of these coins up as "small change" - they were cut into quarter jawas, that is pieces of 2x2 milimeters.

Not the kind of coin that is easy to find once you drop it on the floor. That is probably why all jawas and quarter jawas are quite rare today.

NEat coin you have there, Laurent. I kinda like those little fat Indian pieces.
