What auction house was selling this? And not to be a doomsday type, but does it kind of worry you as to the authenticity of some of that other super high value stuff (assuming this is the same auction)? Any thoughts?
I am buying and trading for RC's of Wilt Chamberlain, George Mikan, Bill Russell, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, and Bob Cousy!
Don't waste your time and fees listing on ebay before getting in touch me by PM or at gregmo32@aol.com !
  • It was in Mastro's auction
Buying 1957 Baseball PSA 8 or higher. Especially Checklists, and Contest Cards. Topps1957psa8set@aol.com
  • very good point, mastro can't afford any type of accusations surrounding their actions, this was something that got by someone and could have really left an impressionable question as to their (mastro's) legitimacy on future sales...I think they handled it properly...everybody makes mistakes at least they caught it before it became a huge issue..
  • Ooops!

I'd love to know who consigned those packs and hear their story about their "find" (cough, cough)!

The sad thing is that it could have been perfectly legitimate packs on a box that a retailer mixed (i.e., dumped his last series 2 packs in with the series 3 packs).

yes Nick M but mastro could have simply amended the description
as 36 packs with a predominance of series 3.some other cards, probably
showing on the reverse may also have been other than series 3 or
there's more than meets the eye.i wonder why mastro doesnt display
the reverse of any cello box packed offerings?.i'm not insinuating anything
other than coins have 3 sides as do cards and for such high dollar items
the webspace is easily available to display the reverses.with 66 cellos the
reverse is extremely significant because the packs in this auction have ruboffs
and those inserts if not 100% fresh in appearance "may" indicate an authenticity
issue.for those that aren't aware i purchased a bad 1966 cello box not long ago
and there are plenty of bad packs out there.the ruboffs are a major clue in determining
the packs' date of manufacture.since these ar eGAI graded we have to presume they are
all good.but why the lot is withdrawn is a question i'ld really like to have answered.

  • PC,
I suspect that we will be inundated over the next week or two with rumors regarding why this was pulled but suspect that we will never know. While there are a number of valid reasons that the auction lot could have been pulled, I am sure that it was done in the best interests of Mastronet.
What I don't really understand is the free ride seems to be given to GAI on this board for their authentication services. All companies make mistakes, that is the way it is. PSA takes regular blastings on this board for minor errors (like the mis-labeling thread currently) and slabbing of "percieved trimmed cards" with little to no evidence by people staring through a holder at a bad angle. Some of those cards may or may not have been trimmed but there seems to be a presumption of guilt when the PSA name is involved. Certifying packs is much much more difficult than grading a card and both are still subjective. I cannot fathom that the error rate in certifying packs is not much much greater than error rate of grading cards regardless of who the company is involved.
I suspect that we will not know what the reason is that the lot was pulled and will be left to wonder. I for one though, do not rule out any possibility at this time.

    PS.
I checked and I have one #216 in PSA 8 but it is not for sale at this time. Though of course I will let you know if that changes. I have a few raw ones that might be gradeable but I have not gotten around to those yet.
Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.
  • I agree with Paul.

With a high powered lot such as this box there is no reason why they could have not shown us the back of the packs also so that we could see the ruboffs.

Since Brock is a series II card and they marketed the box as a series III, they either did not do their homework on the box or someone pulled a fast one over their eyes and they did not catch it until potential bidders started to ask them questions.

All that bieng said I would stay away from 66' cello packs anyway as I have opened up a bunch of these packs in the past and found either that they were tampered or that the cards inside had weak corners and were not worth grading.

It will be interesting to see if they include this box in their next auction or to see whatever happens to it.

By the way, I too am looking for #216 in PSA 8- there must be a hoard of them sitting somewhere in the midwest......maybe BMW Sportcards can locate the find and tell us all about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
