I can't really be sure on this one, but it is either a die fill or the bottom of the D got hit just right by another coin.

If it is not post strike damage, then it is a die fill. Fairly common on the reverse for Morgans, usually with grease.
  • I agree with K6AZ - looks like a filled die, probably grease. Not at all uncommon, IMHO.

Can't tell for sure from the picture but I suspect a hub break, not a filled die.

If it is a hub break, it should be a listed VAM. Herb, what date is this coin?

I should have looked closer... this is a 7TF 1878. What you have is either a VAM 195 (totally broken D at bottom) or VAM 195a (partially broken D at bottom). Take a close look and see if the D it totally broken or partially broken.

    Eric and Condor, thanx

I'm looking at the VAM book now, itza 195 A image

I musta been half asleep last night.

My D looks just like the one in the book and I can make out a very faint diagonal line thru the R and top of T.

I know you guys are good, but Eric how did you know it was a 1878 ??

The top arrow feather is in line with the other feathers. On the reverse of 1879, the top feather is slanted. This 1878 reverse was also used on some 1879-S and 1880-CC Morgans, but since there was no mintmark, I knew it was a 78.
