What ARE these things? I saw a hoard of them at the Orlando show.

They're shells you can buy for housing your coins. Snap together.

I use them, and recently sold some coins in them. I really like them, excellent for raw coins that you don't want to pay to have slabbed to fit in your slab boxes.
  • Yea Eric I meant to tell you I like those CoinWorld Holder, neat.

I really like them Herb, and you can also buy them in PCGS size. Great protection for those coins that just aren't worth the money to get slabbed.

Yeah, you get the picture. Though some guys will print up labels and put them up on eBay as "certified".

Why is that a "racket"? Weren't the coins genuine?

If the buyer is lucky, they will be genuine. If he's really lucky, they will be problem-free.

I believe most individuals selling these as "slabbed genuine" on eBay are trying to give the uninformed the impression that these coins are certified and comparable to coins in more "recognizable" slabs. Do you disagree?

I haven't reviewed enough of these auctions to have an opinion. Have you?

I don't know if I've seen "enough." Maybe, maybe not.

I notice that you don't have any coins in Coin World slabs listed on the Eureka site. Is that just a coincidence, a reflection of the fact that most reputable dealers don't sell quality product in these slabs, or is it something else entirely?

All I'm saying is that a Coin World slab labeled genuine is no different that a 2X2 with "genuine" or "MS69" or whatever else may be written on it, but is also without the guarantees and protections that people may assume a slab offers.

What makes thing difficult though is that some legitimate firms are also using the Coin World shells as an inexpensive source of slab shells. For example this one which just came to my attention. This one is a bit different in that rather than doing grading or authenticity, they do attributions of VAM varieties.

Something else entirely. VISITORS to Eureka are only shown offerings of PCGS, NGC, ICG and ANACS certified coins.

EUREKA MEMBERS can view the members-only bulletin boards on which anything can be listed, including CW holdered coins. I doubt that anybody would bother mentioning the holders, though. It would be like mentioning that a coin comes in a Mylar flip.

In this case he was viewing them at a show, so luck has nothing to do with it.

  • Centsles has been grading and slabbing some of his coins in the Coin World holders for a while now.
Unless i miss-understood somewhere along the line i heard that he is a pretty good grader ? He labels the coins with a grade and "Genuine".

    Any problems with him ?

He won the dealer division in one of the rounds of the PCGS grading contest.

The coins will be genuine, but they will not grade at PCGS or NGC. They are problem coins.

A lot of people here have a low opinion of centsles, which I don't understand. I have bought a number of nice coins, cheap, from centsles.

Added: THey were PCGS graded coins.

    Yes, my point exactlyimage

  • << <i>A label that can be read from the top that aids in identification when stored in slab storage boxes >>

Now I really dig that idea image

Oh ....somebody's.......gonna buy that bust $10.

I even looked at it. Doubt it would slab in NGC/PCGS.

    But it .....is....cheap. So far.
