What I am seeing are some die chips in star L1 and a die crack running from Liberty's neck through star L2.
  • Eric, thanx

yup, that is a small die crack going tween the stars and to liberty's neck and the piece of metal looks like a die chip.

Die chips and die breaks are faily common on Morgans. A lot a vams mention both. Common, but still really neat to find.

  • So a piece comes off the die and fuses to the coin ??

Usually, a piece of the die breaks off and the "extra" metal is actually part of the planchet expanding into the missing part of the die. I can't tell on these pictures, but you also could have a strike through debris. Does the metal around the star look like part of the coin, or does it look like a piece of foreign material?
  • Yeah, Die Chips can be cool... like in my Logan/McCloskey Federal Half Dime book, most reverse dies mention some die chip at some point in it's life, usually comes out as a filled loop of S, M, and the loops of 8 in the date...

  • Here is a die chip in the lower loop of the 8 on a bust half dollar.

  • Wow, I like that half dollar die break. I'm a big die break fan myself and have seen lots and lots produced on the 1921-D morgan dollars.

OK Herb, what you have is a die crack extending from the tip of the neck through stars L1 and L2, with die chips in star L1.
