Went to the Michigan State Show in Lansing today

Talked with many dealer friends, but only bought one coin. A fake 1916 D mercury. I paid a whole 50 cents for it.
Things were going real well for opening day of the spring show.
I found one 1853 seated quarter variety I hadn't seen before, but after showing it to Larry Briggs and talking with him I decided not to buy it. I thought it might be the double date, but it wasn't. Maybe the gang date punch was just struck into the die too hard.
The common junk like new 2004 SAE and the new quarters were selling pretty strong.
There sure isn't much stuff to look at in Seated coins anymore. What little there is has really been picked over, as well.
There's a whole lot more seated coins on the internet, but you can't take them in hand to examine them.
In the entire show, I didn't see even one ACG slabbed coin although I admit I wasn't specifically looking to see if there were any. The dealers seem to have an aversion to them.
All in all, I enjoyed the day.

  • Why did you buy a fake coin? Do you collect fakes? Was there a dealer holding a sign up saying, "Selling fake coins"?

I bought the fake merc as a novelty item, and yes, I do collect counterfeits. I forgot to mention I also found a fake seated quarter as well but I didn't buy it. It was a cast copy, and I have lots of examples of them. I showed the dealer where the metal was poured into the coin at the reeding.
When I said there wasn't much in the line of Seated material, I should have qualified that by saying Larry Briggs had a lot as he always has, but I like hunting for varieties and dealers' mistakes. Larry is way to smart to miss a rare variety or make a mistake, especially on Seated stuff.
I may run back over this morning and have ANACS look at a couple pieces I have and give me their grade opinion. I have a flawless Mint State 1877S quarter I bought years ago. I don't slab my coins, but I'm curious about what it'd grade, and an 1869 Great Britain Penny with a light scratch in high grade. For those of you that don't do foreign coins, the 1869 GB penny is like the 1909S VDB lincoln. The KEY.
