copper cleaning?

i just bought a 1849 Lrg Cent for my U.S. type set. I have absolutely no knowledge reguarding this series but it was only 5 dollars so i felt i couldn't go wrong. It has VF details but it has a film of dirt covering half of the obverse and almost all of the reverse. Is there anything i can use to clean this dirt off saftley (??acetone??) or should i just leave it as is?
