THE MONSTER DEEP CAMEO 2003 SILVER SETS ARE READY TO SHIP

wondercoinwondercoin Posts: 16,979 ✭✭✭✭✭
Please PM me if you are interested in a five piece set of 2003(s) SILVER State quarters grading PCGS-PR69DCAM at $200/set delivered (PAYPAL fine as well). I had to go through 300-400 PR69DCAM's of each state to pull these very special (20) MONSTER DEEP CAMEO coins of each state. I believe these coins represent the best 5%-8% of the PCGS-PR69DCAM coins I went through. Incidently, Maine was the toughest to pull a MONSTER DCAM - I needed to go through 400 PCGS-PR69DCAM's to pull the (20) coins I was looking for. Besides selecting the very deepest of DCAM's, I also required as spot-free surfaces as I could find, no haze and minimal marks for the grade. I spent the better part of a day of my time selecting these (20) sets from among the 300-400 sets I went through. These (20) sets I built are about as "cream" as you can ever expect to find without spending around $1,500-$2,000 to buy a PCGS-PR70DCAM set.

And, if you think "they all are the same", I can also sell a regular 2003(s) 5 pc. Silver set in PCGS-PR69DCAM (nice spot-free coins) at $94.95 delivered anywhere in the US.

PM to order, while limited supplies last. image

  • Okay Mitch,
Now that you have spent all that time and are as current as anyone can expect on those coins, tell us in 25 words or less, if possible, what is the difference between the Monster DCAM in 69 and the regular old DCAM 70's that cost x10 or so? There must be specific qualifiers since you weeded out the haze and hairlines for the Monsters, and a 69 must have a complete and detailed strike to get there.
I don't know anything about moderns that grade in 69 or 70, and I am sincerely interested in your opinion.

Dick: Your question is fair and here is the best answer I can give you (sorry I could not do it in 25 words):

The grade of PR70DCAM is comprised of a quality component and a designation component. My handpicked PR69DCAM coins are among the deepest quality designation 2003 state quarters you can find. For those of us who love DEEP DEEP CAMEOS, my coins are about as good as it gets. However, in most cases (I say "most", because I believe PONTIACINF from our boards cracked out one of my 2002 handpicked coins and it regraded PCGS-PR70DCAM), my PR69DCAM coins would not achieve the perfect PR70CAM grade due to a very small mark or a faint hairline, etc. My intent in searching these coins out was to locate the very best examples of the designation of DCAM one could find, coupled with minimal marks, etc. As my heading states - the "Monster DCAM" coins are ready to ship - I do not profess to be shipping teshnically "perfect" coins - just some of the DEEPEST DCAM high grade coins for the year I have located. If super DEEP DCAM's interest you - you should love these coins. If the depth of DCAM is of no great interest to someone, the $95 set of coins should likely suffice.

  • Mitch,
Pretty good answer. I was thinking I should buy them all and crack them out, but you've given a pretty fair explaination for not trying that.image Do like the deep cameo though.
I have some older proof sets that I've always wondered how the coin could be any better. What power do you look under to decide the critical choice of submitting or saving your money.

While we wait for the answer... ...Good question... What power mag. if any does WC use for the better part of a day?
    0x?
    2x?
    2.5x?
    3x?
    5x?
    7.5x?
    10x?
    15x?
just throws the coins against the wall to see which ones stick?
    other?

Dick/Steve: I screened the roughly 1,750 coins down to around 200 with the naked eye and then put a 10x on the final 200 coins to weed them down to 100. I believe PCGS uses no higher than a 5x to grade these coins. I like the 10x personally for a task like this.

I recall similar threads going back a year or two ago and wasn't the feeling back then that a pr70 coin would excel in strike (detail) and cameo frost -- much deeper frost?? I think we could use phrases such as "frost that you spoon on" vs "frost that is shoveled on." I know that with pre-1965 proofs the pr70s earned their grade from the superb strike.

is there a published standard for pr70dcams now?

OnlyRoosies took a drive up today to personally inspect the "MONSTER DEEP CAMEO" set vs. the typical set coins, which he compared it to first hand, side by side. Let's see what he has to say about these coins. image

I just got back from viewing these coins, I was in the market looking for a set for my Dad.
(its his birthday today). I already had it in my head to just pick up a standard set in PF69DCAM.
After viewing these coins and holding them side by side next to several other 69DCAM's (PC's standard DCAM's)
my mind was quickly changed. The difference was that of night and day. Thick frost with deep
mirrors on the monster DCAM's. All the coins I viewed were spot and haze free but the HUGE
difference was in the frost. I had to have the best and ordered the rest of the set (99 - 02)
when Mitch puts them together. I have no doubt my Dad will be thrilled with the set I will
be giving to him tonight and even more thrilled when I tell him the rest of the complete state
quarter set is on its way.....Thanks Mitch for the eye opener

"but the HUGE difference was in the frost"

That it is in a nutshell - if you like your DCAM coins, as I do, with surfaces that look like "it has just snowed 6 inches outside" - you pay the extra $20/coin for these special coins. image

Thanks Nick for the independent assessment - I know you came up to buy your Dad the "cheaper" birthday present - sorry it didn't work out that way. image

  • Just received my order of Deep Cameo 2003 Silver State Quarters from Mitch. Purchased one of the twenty so called MONSTER sets Mitch had available for sale. I have to admit that I was a little skeptical and hesitant about spending $200.00 for a year set of Silver Proofs, after all they are only Statehood quarters. However my curiosity got the best of me and I'm happy to say that whatever doubt I had is out the window now. These sets are truly amazing and well worth the extra $$$! The difference between this set and the other previous 4 years of Silver Proofs I have is like night and day. I live in Alaska where the snow is starting to melt and patches of grass are beginning to show but it's snowing like crazy in my house! MAN these babies are frosty!!!

Thanks Mitch! You made a believer out of me. You can put me down for one of the 2004 sets should you choose to go through the pain and agony of looking through hundreds of these sets to find a few Monsters like the ones I just purchased. My only regret is that I didn't come to you sooner. My 1999 thru 2002 sets will forever look mediocre up against these. Thanks again!!!

Rick: Thanks for the follow up on your set and I am very pleased that you liked it so much. image

I am planning to pour through 300 or 400 of the 2003 Clad state quarter sets as well tomorrow or the next day to (hopefully) select (20) or so monster DCAM sets as well. Monster DCAM high grade state quarter clads are VERY difficult to locate. Anyone can PM me if they are interested in obtaining one of the clad or silver MONSTER DCAM sets.

P.S. Rick - Can you post a scan of the monster DCAM coin as compared to a typical DCAM coin? Just use the Wash side of each coin for easy comparison.

  • Mitch,

The only proofs I own are the Statehood quarter sets and I've never attempted to photograph any of them. As you know my first love is Colorful 1932-1964 Washingtons. It's taken me forever to learn how to get halfway descent images of them. I doubt very seriously that I could do any justice to the DCAM State quarters as I'm sure it's a whole different ballgame trying to capture the Cameos. Perhaps when time allows I'll give it a shot and if they come out okay I'll post them.

For everyone's information, yesterday I spent several hours reviewing hundreds of PCGS-PR69DCAM 2003 Clad quarter sets in search of MONSTER DEEP CAMEOS. While the sets I reviewed were, overall, of solid quality both technically and from the standpoint of deep cameo, very few coins rose to the level of "MONSTER DEEP CAMEOS" I search for. I was able to put together only a couple sets of super deep cameo coins and had to quit searching as it simply wasn't worth the time or effort. I came away with the conclusion that MONSTER DEEP CAMEO (the "snowing outside" look, for which I found nearly no coins) high grade 2003 clad state quarters were very difficult to locate. If you own one of these, it may prove to be a very collectible coin in the decades ahead image
