Man, that would look great in my registry set...can't spring for it right now, however. Bet it sells for $600+...

Rob, is that other card on the left yours? Can you hook me up? image

Any guesses what it will end at? I'm saying $775.99. Closest to the pin wins a PSA 7 1983 Topps #360 Ryan.

It works like Price is Right - closest without going over.

    mudflap;

I think the last one on the bay cleared $1500... that said, I'll go $1250, Bob Barker. (My guess, not my bid, I'm all in on this one boys.)

  • Since some folks (not me, dammit) are getting big refund checks from Uncle Sam, I'll venture a guess of $1385

I think the first one went for $1850 which is the highest price ahead of Earhart Rose.

Jerry, that card is not mine but at the time I wished it was.
  • I my financial resources were in better shape I give anyone a run for their money on this one, but alas I won't be able to pursue it very far, unless of course I get hit with the need for greed.

I think the first 1980 Topps Ryan PSA 10 was a nicer card. This one isn't quite as well centered and isn't as white as the first.

I don't know if the first guy brightened up the scan but the DSL one has off-white borders and while it's probably an attractive card in it's own right it's not as nice as one or any with those nice snow white borders.

I'm expecting it to be a steal this time around.
  • ctsoxfanctsoxfan Posts: 6,246 ✭✭
Rob, I agree. I just sold a blazer of a 9 a few weeks ago, and without seeing this 10 up close, the 9 looked just as nice. It still got a nice price, and I still have a sweet 9 in my registry set. This is one time where overpaying, just so you can have a 10 holder, might not be a smart idea.

If I had the money when the first was up I probably would have been stupid enough to try and win it.Throughout the duration of that auction I was looking to see how I could pull it off but it was unethical right from the start.

This pop 2 card will reach,or come close to 4 figures just because of the lack of 10s in Ryans from 80 and down but your right it's one worth passing on for the centering alone.

I love the 80 cards that have the Nice white borders and went through a few 580 9s to find the right one.I kept finding 55/45 and off-white 9s like this 10,but then wound up with a nice nearly 50/50 centered 9 and awesome color.Only thing that kept me searcing for something better was the rear centering which was closer to 85/15 but almost 90/10.Other than that it was the sweetest 580 I've had pass through here.

    Jim,

The 81 Ryan PSA 10 went for about the same price. I say no price is too high if you really want it.

Gotta be honest... I had no intention of bidding here, but with the auction languishing around $650, and an agreement I made tonight to sell me 1965 OPC Aaron and Mays cards... I decided to throw in a bid of $800 for yucks (I took two tries at it with half hour left) not expecting that I'd win it... have to say I am SHOCKED! But happy as I thought it'd go for $1250 even though it's not the highest quality 10...

Anyone interested in a PSA 9 1980 Nolan Ryan?
  • ctsoxfanctsoxfan Posts: 6,246 ✭✭
Nice going, con40! I think my guess wins our contest, too!

Do you have a set this is going in? Just curious about my competition...I actually forgot all about this one tonight, there was a small part of me that was itching to get in on the bidding for it.

It will be going into my 3 Ryan Player sets... that's it. Congrats on the contest win! I had to toss a bid in as the price was too good to pass up. The other Ryan PSA 10 went for well over $1500 I think!

Hey!When you get it I'd love to hear about anything worth sharing.

Of course you know in my little corner of the world I like to hear about 1980 PSA cards.

    Rob;

Will do. I was thinking of posting a real nice scan of the card. My sense is that it is a bit whiter than DSL's pic. But that might be wishful thinking!

In the market for a PSA 9 Nolan Ryan? I suddenly have a spare! LOL!
  • RobERobE Posts: 1,160 ✭✭
Thanks!I would love to hear how it looks and see a different scan for ha ha's.

BTW- I have zero complaints with PSA 10 80 cards from DSL some of my sweetest monster 10s came from them.

Two Benches the Dawson and a couple checklists come to mind.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any better...

Only 2 of 493 have graded a 10. Using that logic, coupled with the fact that Keith just won a 10 for $750, the BIN of $350 for this PSA 9 doesn't seem all that farfetched. I would have ended this one already if I hadn't already blown my tax return on other worhtless peices of cardboard...
  • mudflap02mudflap02 Posts: 2,060 ✭✭
ctsoxfan PM me your address if you want that gem of a Ryan card. While your guess of "600+" was a little dodgy, I'm looking at it with the same logic as the $1 bids on TPIR. That being said, I'm pretty damn proud of myself for getting it within $15 on an auction that ended that high, even if it was a little high. Who says you can't be happy with a little dumb luck.

Enjoy the card Keith. - Kind of off topic, but I always wonder what people mean by that. I mean, yeah, I will enjoy looking at it every now and then, but sometimes sellers are like "Enjoy this fabulous card - it really is one of a kind!" Like now that I own it, I'm going to take it down to the Club Med and loll around in the sun with it before the two of us head to town. I think I'm going to take some pictures of me "enjoying" some of my cards and will have them posted in the next few days.
  • CON40CON40 Posts: 1,324 ✭✭✭
    Thanks mudflap!

I plan on "enjoying" my card thoroughly! I'll leave the details of my enjoyment to your imagination! heh-heh... good thing its encased in plastic!

Seriously, I do look at my nice cards pretty regularly. It'll stay in my house where I can stare at it anytime the urge comes up! Excuse me, I have to go look in the mirror now and make a big "L" with my hand on my forehead!

Hey, I have an extra PSA 9 I'll let go of for $300!! LOL. That guy actually emailed me and said "I see you just missed that PSA 10 1980 Ryan. I have a PSA 9 on eBay right now plus a Joe Namath RC too!" Yeah, whatever. eBay Spam!
  • Congrats! Keith,

Hopefully the card isn't as off-white as the auction picture, if it isn't DSL cost himself some money with that bad scan and you will have gotten a pretty good deal.

Kind of expensive 1.5 point upgrade though, but like I'm one to talk. I think I've spent on several occations a considerable amount of money for a .5 - 1 point upgrade to go to a PSA 10 version of a card.

I'm kind of surprised that more of the 1980 Ryans haven't been sent in, while PSA 10's are tough, PSA 9's still sell in the $85-$110 range and PSA 8's in the $15-$30. To have less than 500 submitted so far tells me that there are a ton more out there waiting to be graded.

Hey, did you see that Adam finally broke the 50% barrier on his set? I think its time to add some more Ryan cards to drop him below 50%. image

Congrats on the Ryan, it will be a great addition I'm sure.

    Scott,
I have an M & M on deck to get graded and added. I am also going to try to get a '91 Collect-A-Book graded and added, should drop the percent, lol.

    Scott;

I know it was a moment of weakness on my part! I ended up bidding 'cuz a few things came together at the right time; the price was languishing much lower than I expected, so I started thinking "bargain"; then that night I got an offer for a couple OPCs from another baord member that brought in a few hundred at just the right time; and it'll be the oldest Ryan "regular" issue I'll have in a PSA 10; plus, I like dealing with DSL/Shane as he is very professional and I have been pleased with other Ryans I've gotten from him.

If I didn't do the OPC deal that night, I really don't think I'd have bid on it since all DSL deals are basically cash only! I think (hope!) the card will be a "little" brighter because the flip is slightly off-white so I'm thinking it's not the best scan.

I expect the latest $5 special will shake out one or two more 80 Ryan PSA 10s... but not much more. The 80 set was Topps last one before overproduction really started to kick in. Plus, the 80s have lots of problems with centering, bad stock, and poor printing (drab colors)... I don't think this purchase will be as foolhardy as the fortune I dumped on a PSA 10 1982 Ryan a while back. I can't remember how much I spent on it exactly, but it was embarrassingly high!!!

Congrats to Adam cracking 50%!!! Unfortunately, when my next PSA order gets back, I'll be requesting a few more additions (I'll post them here for others to see and comment on), so he may be going "under" again soon! He hates that! LOL!
  • Keith,

I think you have me to blame for the 82 Ryan PSA 10, that was in my "gotta have it now at any cost" phase, which fortunately for me and a lot of Ryan bidders was cured by a dose of unemployment.

I think the final auction price on the 82 Ryan PSA 10 was around $404+, sorry about that. image You did get me back a little on the next one though, as you bid it up to $275. image I just sold that one a few weeks ago to Steve Leone for his 82 Topps Set, and I only charged him $150. image

Fortunately for all involved in collecting Ryan's those days are over, and hopefully all will benefit. image

No apologies! When you get "the fever" it's like a blind power that makes you punch in digits no rational person would consider! Man, I've been there... and unfortunately still go there occasionally! LOL!

I don't recall the bidding war on the 82 Ryan, but the price sounds right (though I don't want to admit that on the record!). The only one I recall was the 1970 Ryan Saves the Day in PSA 9 (another DSL special!)... I had the fever bad on that one and paid over $500... I do remember you being in on that auction. I also remember you getting the next one for about $350 less! OUCH!!! I couldn't look in the mirror for weeks!!

But, at the end of the day, I know silly money spent on a Ryan card is still better than any money spent on a Bill Buckner card (or other schmo of your choice!). LOL!

Well, I sold a 9 last month, and it closed at $180. Sweet card, too. I didn't think I would get nearly that much (even surprised RobE!), especially when I had a much tougher Ryan card (1979 PSA 9 NQ) up at the same time, and it only brought $60. I don't think the 80 Ryan 9 should be worth more than an 80 Henderson RC 9, despite the lower pop.

Mudflap, thanks for the offer...I appreciate it! I actually have an 1983 PSA 9 of that card, so I'm all set. Next in line who needs it should take it.

Ain't that the truth, I wandered out into the collection of year sets 70,71,72 and got sick of paying $50-whatever$ on set commons when I could have gotten some nice PSA 9's or 10's of a Ryan that I needed. I have since dumped all those cards on Ebay, mostly for less than what I paid. I am back to Ryan collection exclusively for now.

I have a few 70T and 72T commons in PSA 9 to get rid of yet, but two or three more weeks on Ebay should take care of them.

I'm guilty of excessive bidding on the 1970 Ryan Saves the Day PSA 9 as well, I couldn't believe you had that deep of a stake on that one.
