Describe the stereotypical coin-collector

I’m curious: How do coin collectors, as a group, compare to the general population in the following aspects?

Gender
Race
Profession
Age
Income Level
Personality
Height/weight/hair color
Tastes in music, food, entertainment, etc
Anything else you can think of…?

Probably the same across the board statistically with the added notation of being a nerd with a love for the outdoors.
That's just me, of course, but I have noticed similar tendencies on numerous posts from a multitude of posters. Or is it just me...?
  • I would agree that coin collectors run the entire gamut of all of the aspects listed.

Being anal retentive (or at least paying close attention to detail) might be slighlty more prevalent amongst coin collectors than the general population, imho.

It would be impossible to classify coin collectors into the categories you have listed, because nerds and dorks of all kinds collect coinsimage

The stereotypical coin collector is a 6'5" 175 lb. brown haired 48 year old white male small business owner earning peanuts.

Very close, but the average height is 5' 10" and the weight is a tad higher at 187 lbs. Other than those two, you nailed it on the head.

Go to a coin show and count the number of folks who DON'T meet those criteria, and you will find few.

So, according to Russ and TJKillian the average collector is:

a Tall, short, thin, slightly overweight white male.

I'll keep my eyes open at the next show to see if I ever see one.

I don't think I've seen any collectors yet, at least none that meet that description.

Like me, all coin collectors are into dark, angry, loud music with suicidal lead singers that are now dead. Eg. Nirvana, Drowning Pool, Alice in Chains (some of my favorite bands with dead singers).

Additionally, coin collectors are secretive, selective somewhat type A personalities, a bit socially disfunctional who stare downward a lot into glass covered cases at things that generally all look alike....image
Collecting ASE's, Disney Dollars, high end for type set and other shiny objects with crayola colors...
