Can the copper flake off a Lincoln??? My 1995 DDO looks like it is???? Maybe???

I was just looking over some coins and noticed something on my 1995 DDO Lincoln that I never did before. Lateral to the LIBERTY is what appears to be a piece of missing copper. Am i seeing things or is this for real.......??? If so, whats it called a "delamination?"

See attached pics.

I also meant to say that under a 17X loop I can see the flow lines in the area missing the copper. Is this common????

Unfortunately yes it is very common, and there's not a thing you can do about it except store it in a dry place. If moisture gets to that zinc, the coin will wither away over a number of years.

Should I put some clear nail polish on it and send it to ACG?? lol...just kidding...

she is just in a 2X2 now, wonder if the big three would grade her?

Of course...the coin isn't damaged, that's a part of the mint process. It may affect the grade, but it wouldn't keep it out of a slab.

It probably is missing copper since this is pretty common. You might want to take
a very close look at it as sometimes there will be slivers of zinc in a bag or struck
into the coin. Zinc is highly reactive and when it is exposed is a bad sign for a coin.

there is a what i will call a crack in the copper in between the L and I in LIBERTY, but no other problems to my eye aided with 10 and 17X loops. I will look at her with a 30X scope....trying to work out getting pics with the scope.

    thanks for the replies
