SCD Authentic

Just curious...

when SCD Authentic went belly-up, did anyone hear of submitters' losing their cards? I figured that, since SCDA was a division of a major company, it sure wouldn't need that kind of bad PR.

I suppose the better question is: does anyone know anybody who submitted ANY cards to SCD Authentic?

  • Larry Fritsch and his son did. They featured full color ads as Larry and his son showed up their freshly graded 52 Mantles.

In hindsight I guess the ad campaign showing off these two handsome mugs didn't work out too well.

I submitted a few cards (free grading) and also bought a few (cheap). I think they were graded fairly and I hate to see quality grading companys go under while PRO & USA keep grading cards.

I never submitted to SCD, but I'll purchase their cards. I just picked up 2 today on eBay that were so cheap that I would have gotten them for under SMR if I cross them over to PSA and they come back a grade lower!

TJ Schwartz submitted quite a few to SCDA. Now it appears he's switched to PSA, judging by his current auctionsebay

He's also the one that used his podium as a Tuff Stuff writer to come out against card grading all the way until SCDA was started. Then all of a sudden, he was all for third party grading (gee I wonder why image )

funny, considering TJ has trashtalked PSA for the last 7 years
  • tj is an idiot. i submitted star co. stuff to scd authentic and always thought the cards were graded fairly so i'm disappointed to see them go. i even submitted a few more star cards after they announced no more submissions and got them back graded. i'm sure a place that big isn't going to keep people's cards.

I never quite understood why SCD Auth never made a bigger impact in the grading game. They started around the same time as GAI, and they had a major advantage, the exposure of their publications. GAI is now one of the leaders and SCD Auth has ceased operations. ...jay
  • i don't think anyone is making money except maybe psa and beckett for grading. sgc is on life support and i don't think global does much either. sgc just refuses to die and global used to have limitless money to spend and was able to make an impact because of it, but i'd love to look at their financials because i think they are losing their butts. It tells you something when a guy like Bushing gets out of there and goes to SCD Authentic, who happens to be killing their grading operation at the time. How bad is that?

Good observations Lamar. I think SGC is no longer on life support as it was recently sold to a NY dealer.

I wonder how much it took to purchase SGC. $100000? $250000? If it was pretty cheap, I wonder why BMW didn't simply buy the company outright. Afterall, BMW and SGC have been together for such a long time, it was almost as if they were a single entity already.

I'm not so sure about SGC being on life support.

Card grading is a business and I think it is fair to say that PSA, SGC and GAI are all operating under different business models. SGC is clearly the lowest key of the operations and do not appear to have a large marketing budget. However, they have been in business for 5+ years and have attracted a pretty loyal following. At the very least, they are well respected for the work that they do. Given this model, they appear to be able to provide a competitive service at a discounted price -vs- PSA.

I also think it is clear that PSA's business model is not able to flourish with a similar pricing structure. One doesn't have to look to far back in time to when there were massive $5/card set registry specials, without a requirement for joining the collectors club. PSA's finances at that time were not exactly rosey and they have changed things to adjust...and their finances have dramatically improved.

Back to the thread, I also think that SCDA did a pretty fair job, although they appeared late into a crowded market...and couldn't make it work. Too bad, I'd rather see them in business today than PRO, AAA, etc.
