Berk Ross 1952 - Overview

I'm currently working on one set--The 1954 Dan Dee set. It's tough going. I'm thinking of starting another early 50's set. The 1952 Berk Ross cards seem to be reasonable. Of course, the Mantle is an arm and a leg and one testicle. However, the set has Williams, Musial, Dimaggio, Mays, Campanella, Hodges, Berra, etc... I don't know of another set with all these stars.

My three questions are:

1) Why is this set so fairly priced?

2) What's the history of the set and Berk Ross in general?

3) Is it something worth building? I happen to like the sepia type photos. They kind of look like vintage cards should. However, with all of you out there ignoring the set, I'm guessing there's a major setback.

Can anyone shine a little light on this issue?

Best,

Ugly issue - hard to find in top grade because of the way it was printed.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • often found off centered, with terrible focus. i actually think that the unperforated 2-card panels are better looking

    I'm "clueless" on that issue.

  • John,

This doesn't sound like a set I should sell my soul to the devil to collect. What do you think?

I would check with the wife & kids first. I do like the "action" of discovering a new set.

  • I believe the 51's are available in panels but the 52's are usually only found as single cards.

I find everything from the card stock, to the perforated panels, to the blurry photography to be unappealing with these cards, even though I own a Sugar Ray Robinson card. Let's just say I am not in any rush to pursuing these cards.

I agree! its a very drab set, especially when compared to its contemporaries like the '51 & '52 Bowman & the '52 Topps.
To those who are wondering what a card looks like...jay
