What are you doing with your tax refund?

Just curious: of those of you getting tax refunds, how many of you will spend--or have spent--your windfall on cards?

I, alas, have to send Uncle Sam a check this year. image

Little known clause in the Tax code :

"You are not required to pay tax on any income that you've already spent."

I just mailed my taxes today April 14th and I am getting a large refund. I always like doing it late so I have a good amount to spend on vacation instead of spending it in Feb. I WILL spend some on cards though. Maybe some vintage wax or something.

  • From the inside front cover of the 1040 Instruction booklet, I quote from the Commissioner:

"One of the unique features of our democracy is the generation of tax revenues through a system of self-assessment."

I've assessed myself enough this year. Here, Mr. Commissioner, is all I have left for you. (I'm sending him a 1992 Topps Nolan Ryan card...I wonder if he collects?)

You might want to consult a tax advisor.

I actually met a guy at a show who gave me his card. He claims to have some unopened Red Man & Cracker Jack packs. I'm not the slightest bit clued in on what kind of offer to make. I did tell him I had to wait until after tax time. So, since this thread was up, I thought I'd post and see what kind of prices you guys might offer? I believe the Cracker Jack is from 1915, obviously the cards are all worth a designated amount, but what kind of value do you place on unopened vintage packs? I assume they are extremely rare and I might potentially have a "gold mine" on my hands. I don't want to get ripped off though and I don't want to rip him off either, but something in the ballpark that wouldn't get laughed at if either of us told the prices we realized is what I am looking for.

I collect mostly modern stuff and really can't even venture a guess.

I don't yet know how many packs we're talking about, or the condition of them. He says he has no idea what they are worth either, he's actually an antique pen dealer... I didn't know there was such a thing. image

    Any thoughts?

You kidding me? There is no such thing as unopened cracker jack packs. If there was - it would have been overrun with maggots decades ago. If he got the 1915 factory/presentation set thing - that would be worth a bundle.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • Nearmint - bad news. I had to pay Uncle Sam today otherwise money was headed your way. image

Hi, the Red man cards with tabs were inserted inside tobacco product which I recall came up for auction every once in a while sealed with the card intactin the early 90's. As was stated by Mikeschmidt, if he has any unopened Cracker Jack boxes - well they are extremely rare even opened. Me thinks this guy may be pulling your leg or has some very, very rare stuff! My 21/2 cents.

  • Spending it on getting my cards graded....and praying I don't get audited. It's tough donating boxes and boxes of '87 Topps Baseball & '90 Hoops commons and taking a nickel deduction for each common with a straight face. Thanks Beckett!

    Valion -

Sounds like Uncle Sam was getting your $ either way!

I was just at the post office with my usual stack of bubble envelopes to mail. The clerk--a friend of mine by now--told me, sternly: don't come here tomorrow. Guess I'll have to find a mailbox to drop my return in...

    Got mine yesterday, 2,388.........banked it.
    Good for you.
  • I thought I was going to tell you all about the new driveway, walkway and fence that is being paid for with my tax refund but my wife just asked me how much I want for baseball cards. I was so surprised that I said, "Uh...I don't know, how much do you think?" She asked if $500 was enough and then wrote me out a check to put in my baseball card account. I'm in a pretty good mood right now.

Just sent Uncle Sam my payment for the interest-free loan he gave me in 2003 (as Toppsgun would put it).

I wasn't aware the cracker jack cards came "raw" in the boxes. I was thinking maybe they came inside the little wrappers similar to the new stuff Topps did? I've never opened any of it, he did say you could see the red man cards in the package. I posted this same question on another board and actually saw a pack posted on ebay for sale right now. Is there just one card in there?

Maybe the way he said it I just thought he meant he had unopened cracker jack packs. I think his actual statement was something to the effect of I have some old unopened red man packs and cracker jack cards. I guess I'll have to go look at them and see. I couldn't find any closed items on ebay for "red man pack" and the one that is up now is at $99, what kind of a premium should I put on it being unopened? Are these worthy of a hefty premium being they are unopened? Or are they more like mid 70's stuff where there is enough found that the premium isn't that much, unless the player is a big name? I am just trying to figure out what kind of price range to be in. Ie if I say hey guys I just bought a bunch of unopened red man packs in good shape for $500 each would I be laughed at? Or if this gentleman came on here and said he just sold a bunch for $500 each would he be flamed off the board for being an idiot? I am trying to figure at what point the price is fair, certainly a bit skewed in my favor is alright, but fair none the less. image

Tax refund? No way the government is holding any of my money, interest free, for the better part of the year. I am paying as always, and doing at the last possible minute.

Into the bank? IRA? No loans to the government? So practical! The MASTRO answer sounds much more fun!

That's the spirit, BigKid! But I think Vargha's answer tops everyone's. Your generosity is admirable, David.
