A graded fake?

Who is GMC and what in the world is this? I've never seen a repro of this card that would fool anybody!

The link didn't seem to work - auction # 4124358861 Text

1959 Fleer Ted Williams Signs #68

    Hopefully my link will work.

First off, with that centering, the card is not a "10"!

But, you're right. This card appears to be fake... the color is a bit too red/brown (and I have a real one to go by), and there appears to be a print pattern called a "moiré" that comes from reproducing 4-color ink dots on press with more ink dots. It is very distracting and obvious and this card seems to have it. You can see it clearly all over the card kinda like looking out a window through a screen.

At first glance, though, the back looks pretty convincing.

My guess would be that it is a very good fake or a highly re-doctored (re-colored?) original.

yeah, this card is the "famous" repro that came out late '70s early '80s (?); this one was a pretty decent fake with a back that looks real, but the front is clearly a picture of a picture. The more recent issue of reprints is even more washed out and the back looks fake too (I think it's white). There's a cottage industry on ebay selling these reprints for like 5 bucks a piece and the earlier "famous" ones have a higher value (??!!) - my concern is that a grading company would slab this card without any kind of note that it's a reprint - and so, I must ask again, who are these people?

Keith I will say this seller is not the culprit as he is listing it as a fake. problem is someone is going to buy it and then list it without stating it is a fake and some unknowing collector will buy it. do you know who the seller is, it says their in boston?
  • CON40CON40 Posts: 1,324 ✭✭✭
Don't know the seller... I've seen them on eBay occasionally but I have not done business with them and I don't think they have a storefront (unless it's in the 'burbs)...

And my harsh remark was aimed at the grading company. They clearly slabbed this with the intent to defraud... just another PRO from where I stand.
  • It appears as though the auction was pulled as the link noted the item number was invalid.

It looks like eBay pulled the plug on this one! It was the right thing to do IMO.

  • Yeah, who the heck is GradeMyCards.com??

Moral of the story....always stick with PSA or SGC or GAI. Of course, that doesn't help the poor newbies out there that get ripped, since they rarely read these boards.
You spilled WHAT on my 1952 Topps Mantle?!?!?! Doh!!

Reproducing Fleer cards without Fleer's consent violates Fleer's copyright and trademarks. Fleer, on the other hand, could reprint (a la Topps Archives) any of its old sets as long as it had the rights from the players depicted to use their likeness in that fashion and from the teams to use their logos in that fashion (and in the case of many of the players in the '60 and '61 sets, who were long deceased at the time, Fleer never needed to pay them anything originally for a right to use their likeness in perpetuity). Team logos that have been abandoned (e.g., Brooklyn Dodgers, Washington Senators) could be used for free without permission in the reprint set too.
