Toned Peace Dollar images for FrattLaw

This is an 1928-S that I received from my grandmother. Because I can't grade peace dollars and the toning is so thick, I decided to send it along with my latest submission to ANACS to see how it would grade. It came back as an AU58. Absolutely beautiful (IMO) and it will never leave my collection. One of my favorites for several reasons. Just wanted to share.

Wow, now that's toned --- I've never seen one like that. And the fact that it is so special to you makes it even better. I wish I had one from my grandfather that was toned.

Do you know how it was kept? I always like to know/speculate where the toning originated. Did she keep in a cigar box, album, envelope?

If I had to guess I'd go with face down in a box of some sort.

    Thanks for sharing. image

    Michael,

To the best of my knowledge, this coin along with several other silver dollars and miscellaneous things sat in a glass candy jar on her dresser for many years. I have two other 28-s dollars that have some toning, but not like this one.

Another question - it is so difficult to read the date and the mint mark (relatively speaking of course), how difficult is it for professional graders to accurately grade heavily toned coins like this?

No one else has any comments for this beauty!? Everyone must think its hideous! image Don't worry, you won't hurt my feelings!
