Interesting Story (moral included free of charge!)...

So I'm buying a Coke and some Ruffles today at the convenience store in my office building... I pay the guy behind the counter and he gives me my change. I thank him, and immediately start to sift through the coins in my hand. So he says:

"Hey, are you lookin' for those State Quarters? I've got almost all of them except for the first year."

I tell him, no, actually I'm looking for older nickels in nice condition and silver coins.

"Silver coins?" he says, confused by my reference.

Yes, I tell him, and run through a quick explanation of the '64 and earlier quarters and dimes that are still out there in circulation (I found two dimes just last week!). He seems interested, and I go on to tell him about how silver dimes are really worth around $.50 and quarters $1.25. I'm getting excited by the look on his face, so I go ahead and show him my pocket piece Morgan and he's enthralled. The guy's eyes lit up when I handed it to him to hold... I think I may have seeded a new collector! I'm going to bring him an old Roosie tomorrow just to make sure.

Moral of the story? .......

Never leave home without your pocket piece!
You shout in your sleep.
Perhaps the price is just too steep.
Is your conscience at rest if once put to the test?
You awake with a start to just the beating of your heart.
Just one man beneath the sky,
Just two ears, just two eyes.

I occasionally give out common date Indian Head cents to store clerks.

They love them, and frequently they gather all the other employees around to take a gander.

    We ARE watching you.

Strange you can't find old coins there. I have a coin from Holland from 1561 (I think that's the date....I'm at work and don't have it here). It has FRISIA on the reverse.
You should be able to find lots of old coins from all the countries on the continent without a lot of looking. Of course you're not likely to find them in change with the Euro being used now.

Good story. If you see the guy often enough you can stoke that ember you hopefully fired up. Is the the guy young or old? Goodness knows we could use some young people joining the hobby>

I used to hand out Buffalo Nickels in my travels. That got a bit pricey. Now, I carry a few steel cents. Either way, people are fascinated.

  • Update:

I dropped off a nice '62 Roosie and an old CoinValues magazine to the man now identified as Alan (he's 28 and manages three shops in the area). I suggested he take a peek through the mag and see if anything interested him, then drop by the downtown coin shop to see some real life examples. Since he already has an interest in State Quarters, I also mentioned he might like looking at some proof quarters. This was all new to him, and he thanked me about 50 times for the coin, mag, and advice.

The best part is, now I have someone new to have a little live "cointalk" with once in a while!

  • That's cool! I only have like 1 person I ever see face-to-face that collects coins here on a near regular basis... but even that is iffy... all depends on if he skips church or not... image And he should be movin soon...

  • Yep I play show and tell in my class all the time. For those who don't know I teach auto mechanics in a for profit school. Most of the young folks are 18 t0 25.

A lot of them now come up to me and ask about coins they have. The new nickel has caused a stir indeed. I think what I like the most is that they are looking.

I am going to start to post infromation on local coin shows and try to get some of them to go.

I love to get folks into the hobby
