One guess would be polished dies

Would have been my initial guess but they don't look like that. Could be the counting machine... but I will yield to the experts who have yet to speak.image

Defect in the planchet maybe. Is that a c at the tip of the top arrow?
The faint lines might be die polish lines the heavier line across the face looks like a reed mark.

    Thats a great looking coin.

Hey Placid, yes, not a bad looking coin for what I paid for it. Many thanks!image

Its impossible to tell in a picture but a die polish line will be raised on the surface.
A scratch from cleaning or friction will go into the surface.

Resembles etching from PVC damage. Hard to say for sure from the scan though.

It does look like c by the arrows. What it is I have no idea. I a photo of what the difference is between die polish and hairlines but I still can't tell the differenceimage

Removed PVC was the first thing I thought of also. But I don't much of anything.

You've been accused of that before.image

Well, maybe having it graded is not a good ideaimage

Yep. It's either PVC or it had some heavy toning that someone maybe spot-treated. Just from the pic I would think it would go in a bodybag. As to the lines; I would have to view it in hand with a 10x+ loupe.

Now!!! Get back in the dark. image

Do you think ANACS would touch this coin?
  • ajaanajaan Posts: 17,430 ✭✭✭✭✭
That's a tough call. ANACS will not slab a coin w/active PVC. Your coin doesn't appear to have active PVC, just removes PVC. I'm guessing they would net grade it. Give them a call.

They would slab it and definitely net grade it. But even without the problems, it doesn't look any better than a 62 with the scar on the cheek there, so why spend the money to holder a $30.00 coin? Spend your money on a nice darkside coin. image

If you really want a great looking '79-S without problems that will slab at any service, let me know, cuz I've got one. image
