Sorry, but you might want to hold out for the possiblity that PCGS body bags it for altered surfaces. The overall color is too light to be natural and the pinkish hue is a dead giveaway that something's not right. They may slide it through but it's definitely not original. Perhaps it's just the light from your imaging set up but if that's the way it really looks then use caution. Glad everybody else likes it though.

This coin is original. The lighting is in Ken's dining room above the table.Try to forget the color and look at the luster and strike. If you held it in your hand,I think you'd agree.BTW,it is one I purchased.I think it is a PQ MS65 with a shot at MS66.

I also disagree with Tonelover. Looks just fine by me, plus the luster looks great. If it comes back 65RD I wouldn't mind buying it.

Of course not seeing the coin in person we're all just talkin' smack anyhow. image

I think this coin will grade 66RD. One tiny obverse spot under the S that is not distracting. The surfaces and luster look terrific. Unless there are some fine hairlines not showing up in the picture, I would expect a grade of 66RD and would be disappointed with a 65RD grade. TomT.

Hard to tell from the photos, but I find it hard to believe that a copper coin 105 years old could be this bright. Like tonelover, I also suspect it may body-bag @ PCGS. Hope not tho'; it certainly is pretty. image

Lighting can produce unnatural color, & we all know that scans can be deceptive. Let it go to PCGS anyway, it looks MS 66 RED to me from what I can see, but if Jon is right, you've only lost the grading fee.

    Regardless, its a super coin.

Doesn't look messed with to me Don. My guess is that it comes back a 65 even though it deserves a 6.

Looks MS66 Red to me. Nice color on obverse. Only minor (very minot) distraction is a small toning mark below the lower left of the shield on the reverse. I would be concerned it could turn into a carbon spot. Get that thing slabbed!

  • If you get anything less than 66RD, you got screwed!!!

There is only 1 minor distraction - the spot near the shield - and the feather detail, the hair curls and the ribbon are absolutely deserving of a 66!!!

  • Definitely at least 65RD. With the feather detail (esp. at the tips) and the hair/ribbon detail it should go 66, but I don't know if the graders will give it a 66.....

Would agree with most of the comments - looks 65R or better. Lighting can hide problems - may have a tick or 2 on the chin and cheek, spotting minimal, nice strike, color nice. The pink is only in the cartwheel and may be a fakeout.

Have gotten better at grading MS65 vs MS66 IHC's since I figured out how PCGS does it. If, at arms length, it has "the look", it's a 66. If not, 65...imageimage Throw away your loupes, lads!imageimage

I agree with tonelover that a body bag is in order if the color really looks like it does on my screen but I suspect it's just the picture and if Ken and Merz say it's original and looks 65-66 I agree image. mike

  • Ken/Don,

It looks just as nice as it did on the site, before Don bought it. If Don had not let his intentions known, it probably would live in Ohio now. image Here's hoping it grades 66RD.

  • It is next to impossible to get a red Indian head in a PCGS holder. I am batting far below .500 with my IH submissions.

    Yes, Lighting anomaly.
I am less than qualified in the art of digital photography. A 5 yr old Kodak with no macro settings, A halogen desk lamp that usually gives a yellow tint to the pics, older Photoshop program ..... It's an up-hill battle.
