It's new Barber day!! Comments please on my 1900 NGC MS65 quarter (edit - new pic added)

My images aren't the greatest, but please let me know what you think. If I wanted this to cross to PCGS, would it get there? The toning is gorgeous and the luster is even better. I love this coin!

Man, that's tough to answer based on the images provided, but I'm going to have to go with a "no". It doesn't appear to have the natural lustrous skin that PCGS likes for the gem grade.

Casey - What's your home address, and where do you hide your collection!

Who knows if it would cross. Why worry about it? In the end it is the coin that will sell itself.

  • don't cross.this is a respectible piece deserving of the grade, without regard to toning.but will probably cross with original surface you describe, but why spend $

Russ, my images pale to what this coin really looks like. The luster is awesome. I have no plans to try to cross it, but was just curious to see what the opinions would be.

Looks like a Barber with character. I am sure the scan is hiding much of the underlying luster. I like it a lot.

Its a solid 65, and if they ( ie: PCGS) don't cross it, it'll come back just as nice as you sent it in.

    Go for it.

    I know I would.

Lots must be hidden in the photo which comes off dull and lifeless. Please give the picture another go to show the "true merits" of this coin.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Another image is below which I think is slightly better, but still not good enough. As many of you know, taking good pictures is extremely difficult and I'm still learning. I picked up this beauty from the fine folks at Pinnacle and it is now the number one favorite in the collection. I mostly collect in the higher circulated grades but decided I needed one gem Barber with nice color that knocked my socks off. This does that for me!

  • Splendid... and it would easily cross, based on what I see

I love MS Barber coinage. Even wrapped in plastic. Unless you are working on a registry
set or trying to sell it, don't send it to PCGS. It's already in a good holder. Can't tell from
the picture if it would cross but it looks a little dull.

Casey: My guess is that your first picture was with a flourecent lamp and the second was with a regular old incandecent.

Flourecent gives the coin a bluish cast and doesn't show luster. Note the holder color.
Incandecent gives the coin a reddish cast but gives luster. Again, note the holder color.

That about right? Now try some natural light instead....it should give better results. Also, consider an OTT lamp (swirl type)...works for me. Also, note you will have difficulty with the NGC slab. It screws up the iris on the camera because it reflects as white. I like to use a black background so PCGS slabs works a bit better.

    Nice coin!

jom, you're very close. Two different light sources were used in addition to me playing with the white balance and other options on my Nikon Coolpix. I still can't use it properly but I think I'm making some progress. Natural light is next when I get some time.
