I had seen that auction. The coin seems to have a splotch under LIBERTY as well as several other problems. The scans may be misleading, but ....

Don - as I recall, your 65 is high-end and may very well be better - so you should be very happy with that!!! Did you ever try that baby for an upgrade? image

I emailed the seller that his pop numbers were wrong - it is now a pop 22 with one higher - but he hasn't felt it necessary to change his listing which has numbers that are months out-of-date. image

Don, I agree with Gerry. That 1936 satin on EBAY has a discoloration under Liberty. He wants $9K+ for it? Maybe I'm a little biased, but my PR64RD which I got for slightly more than 5% of what he wants looks alot better than his coin. Don, I'm sure your coin must look nicer too. People get too hung up on the grade IMHO. Steveimage

I believe the PR65 I have is definitely nicer than that one.I was just surprised that it was on Ebay.

That coin is either overgraded, has turned in the holder or that is a terrible picture. Reminds me of the infamous 63. I hope its just a bad picture.

Is it recently upgraded ? Who is the seller?

PCGS says its a 66 so it must be a 66 image

Stewart it probably doesn't matter if its a 66 or not as long as they label says it is. image

The cert # and the slab(no scratches) tells us it isn't recent. The spot under Liberty will only get uglier IMHO.

Obviously the next question is" Is this a candidate for a buy back" ?

Not at the price he wants. CW Coin Values has it at $3,500. Steveimage

Don Merz and steve J Cohen - This is not a buy back. This is a Proof 66 with a stain or two on the coin.Coin World trends are NOT to be taken too seriously. They are rather a guide for dealers to buy coins.

Check with Angel Dees or Heritage Auction archives as to recent sales and prices.

That is a very high asking price. I found a PF64 RB for a whole lot less. Here is a picture of it. There are no funny spots on it. There is a hairline scratch in the obverse field above the date that knocked it down to a 64. The color is excellent too. I'd say it is 95% red that is just a touch darker than the coin being auctioned. It is redder that some coins I've seen in red holders. RB coins that are almost red are the best!

    Stewart,
Seriously now, would you bid $9k for that coin?
Would you bid $6k for that coin?
Would you bid $2k for that coin?

Truth be known Stewart, I bet you wouldn't bid ANYTHING for that coin? What do you say?

I would have no problem paying 9k for a 36 satin Proof 66 that I wanted to buy.Heck the 36 satin Proof 67 sold for less than 40 k and I think it was a steal.

    Stewart,
I was refering to that particular satin proof 66 in the auction, based on the scan. I know it is a fairly rare coin, but that example is in worse condition than my PR64RD. Steveimage
