Just bought these, I think I have an upgrade at least on the 1878 7/8TF and the PL is much nicer in person...what do you Morgan experts think?

Finished my classic commems, think I'll start on these. image

Cheers,

Bob

I agree on the '78. The rest look about right.

I don't care for the 1884, but the first two look expecially nice!
    When in doubt, don't.

I have been 100% upgrading on the slabs like the first and third ones. They were fairly tight then.

I'd have to agree with you on the 1878, but the more I look at the 1882-S, the more it looks about right. But I DO like those holders.

    Cheers,

  • I recently sent in some PRIMO MS64s that I would put up against most MS65s all day long. Everytime I try to play the game PCGS seems to get really tight.

Well, I think the spread on the 7/8TF is worth a free submission.

I think the 78 may have a shot. wouldn't mess with the 80 though---if you do deciede to crack the 80, be sure the mirrors are a lock PL before doing so.

Finished my classic commems, think I'll start on these.
congrats, I'm finding the commem series to be quite challenging!

    I like the 85 image
  • They are all good lookin coins. I agree that the 78 stands a good chance of upgrade but I'm not sure of the rest. It's hard to tell from scans.

I know that there are weak and strong designations for the 7/8TF, but aren't there varying degrees of each? I did a search, but couldn't find anything.

    Cheers,

    Bob
  • did you see THIS website? Not a whole lot of info....but pretty good explinations of the 7/8 designation. image

I love the 1878 varieties. Your 1878 looks like a Vam 40 (are the serifs broken on the N & M of UNUM?; is there a die chip on the earlobe?) If so this a number of attractive two-sided proof likes have been found and this variety can also be found in DMPL. I only mention it so you can more readily consider its upgrade potential.

Ballpark price range for VAM40, considered to be a "common" variety on a scale of Ultra-rare, rare, scarce, common and very common:

    63 - 150 to 175; PL 175 to 250; DMPL 325 to 400
    64 - 300 to 350; PL 375 to 425; DMPL 1500 to 2000

These are of course the VAM prices, which sometimes coincide with other "pricelists". In other words, a collector of 1878's price list.
