Opinions on ANACS Please

I've never sent coins in for grading but have recently acquired 20-30 that I would like to have graded.I really hav'ent the patience to wait on PCGS.NGC just has too many MS70s on late night TV.So I'm thinking of going with ANACS.They are pretty cheap and have a much quicker turnaround time. Will their grades be pretty accurate?

I like ANACS and as a matter of fact, I just mailed them 54 coins yesterday. They have a special right now for 10 silver dollars for $10.00 a pop with a 10 day turnaround time. I sent 20 silver dollars and the remainder were error coins under their modern service which is $7.00 per coin.

ANACS grades correctly in my opinion, but like any other service, a mistake may happen here or there.

I'm in the same boat. From what I've seen, they seem to be in the ballpark gradewise. Collectors don't seem to like the small holders, but I have some early items with problems and ANACS net grades, so no body bags.

Meant to say, I have sent ANACS well over 300 coins over the last 2 years. Never had a problem with the exception of a 1999D cent being put in a 1999P holder. They were quick to correct the issue and quite apologetic.

I have crossed a handful of silver dollars to PCGS and all graded the same, or even a point higher than ANACS.
  • rampage, that dollar deal is one of the ones I'm considering.Do you know if they'll take modern commem dollars with that deal or do thay have to be Peace and Morgans?
  • They are a viable option for sure. But turnaround time for economy submission is about 12 weeks. The $15 express service is a bargain.

I like ANACS. I've only submitted to ANACS and PCGS, and have sent many more coins to ANACS. Use their 5 day service. Economy is 2-3 months. I like their smaller holder - the eye is drawn to the coin, not the holder.

Good product. No body bags. Opinions at shows. Courteous service.

    I like ANACS, too.
I have a feeling that, if they were to make their holder about the size of PCGS/NGC, more people will go to them. Just my guess.

ANACS is grading very, very tightly and has been for at least a year. More and more coins appear to be crossing to PCGS without
a problem. For the moment, I think their grading is tighter than NGC. DMPL standards appear to be tougher as well, as a
cracked coin out of an ANACS DMPL holder did not even PL in my last submission. image

    For $15, using the 5 day, 5 coin express service is a super bargin. The $10 special, 10 coin, 10 day is even better;
    but it's not for Moderns.

ANACS appears determined to become more accepted in the marketplace, but they need to drop those cheap looking holders first.

I'm considering taking advantage of ANACS $10 special, 10 coin, 10 day service but wonder if they have ever offered as good if not better grading service at the shows they attend, like the upcoming Central States Show in Milwaukee in May...
Anybody know what specials they have traditionally offered at the shows?
I see they offer FREE grading opinions at the shows, but I also want the encapsulation service as well.

  • Their "walk through" Service is $99 but it may be cheaper at shows.

Edited to add:The 10,10,10 special ends in six days.Better hurry!

The fastest they'd have is one day--they take submissions and fly them to/from Ohio, having them graded with a one-day turnaround. They never bring slabbing equipment with them, as far as I know.

    Hi wjd283;

I've sent a considerable number of coins to ANACS the past 6 months.
    Have been very pleased.
    No problems.
Their grades have tightened, in my view.
In fact, I mentioned on here awhile ago that with one recent ANACS submission, I thought PCGS would have graded higher overall on that particular submission.
I like the smaller size holder.

  • Must you pre-purchase an ANACS submission kit to submit coins?

  • << <i>Must you pre-purchase an ANACS submission kit to submit coins? >>

Nope...you can use your own materials as long as you meet ANACS criteria, which is pretty much the same as NGC/PCGS

  • << <i>PCGS likes ANACS coins >>

Russ, please elaborate.I take it you cracked some ANACS,submitted to PCGS,and recieved favorable results?
  • I really like the idea of no body bags. ANACS would be the way to go for the older stuff, a lot of which has problems (cleaning, etc.).

In my opinion, ANACS overgrades Morgans by one point on Mint State coins; one step (55 vs. 53, etc.) on AUs and XFs, and at least one step on VFs.

Yes, I've had ANACS coins cross at PCGS over the last 10 years, but it's been the exception rather than the rule. The best luck I've had has been with MS61-62-63, and XF45. The worst luck I've had has been with MS65 and up (zero) and VF-anything (zero).
    When in doubt, don't.

I have one Morgan Dollar that is in a ANACS holder that I like very much. I've heard bad and good about them, with good winning out over bad. I believe that they will attribute more VAM numbers than NGC or PCGS do, but I'm not certain about that.

I really prefer their smaller holders, I wish that NCG & PCGS had a smaller holder like ANACS.

I haven't submitted to them in a few months now, but I was getting economy turnarounds in about 30 days.

Never had any problems with them, unlike, ahem, well, you know.

FYI...ANACS is brutal on Modern Commemorative $'s. I would venture a guess that many will come back MS68 while PCGS or NGC would grade them at MS69.

They do take modern commem dollars under this special. Any dollars, as long as they're silver image.
  • ANACS is great. I hate it that PCGS and NGC won't grade problem coins. I just got my coin from ANACS today. They wrote me a note thanking my helpfulness to them. I like their small holders better. I can fit it into my small wallet easily.

Sorry I did not reply sooner. Yes, that special includes all dollar coins, silver or not. Two of the coins I have in right now are IKEs.

Also, about 95 percent of my error coin collection that is slabbed is slabbed by ANACS. That percent will go up just a hair when I get this recent batch of 34 coins back. image

It really depends on the coins. They are good with attribution, varieties and errors. Morgan VAMS are good because they will at least attribute them. They tend to be inconsistent which can be difficult to tolerate at times.

About a dozen and counting, all grading at or higher than the ANACS grade. They tend to be pretty conservative in what I collect; early date Kennedy Halves, 1964 to 1970.

  • Well,I got my 10,10,10 submission mailed out to ANACS today. The PO lady assured me they would have them by noon Fri.for $19.85.(ouch)
Five errors/VAMS four regulars and a 97P Botanical gardens.I think all will grade 55-63 except one VAM Morgan may go 64-65 and the BG may go 69.I'll know in approx 12 days.
Thank you'all for your input ! image
  • I am dropping off 10 Morgans at ANACS tomorrow. Going to Chicago to see our son and his wife, so will stop in Dublin, OH. and let ANACS have my submission.image

ANACS can be very tough on grades. I wouldn't submit Mint State coins to ANACS or rare date coins with minor imperfections in lower circulated grades. PCGS is worth the extra bucks for these types of submissions. I do use ANACS for coins valued at 100 bucks or so if they are pretty much no brainers.

From the things I've heard about ANACS, is sounds like they are a bargain grading company in which coins in their holder's are not considered as valuable as NGC and PCGS, but they are fair and honest.
  • I also like ANACS because of their customer service, low costs, and quick turn around times. Their free grading opinions at some coin shows are a godsend! However, in my "Barber Half Expert" opinion, they are not very consistent at grading Barber Halves. Since this is my primary area of collecting, I know the series backwards and forwards with all the date/strike nuances, condition rarities, etc. In my experience, ANACS seems very inconsistent in their grading of this series. I've seen many slabs that were graded spot on, but I've also seen many where they clearly overgraded the coin.

Then again, people have had similar experiences with each of the major services so this is not an "ANACS-only" phenomenon. All this goes to show is that you should "buy the coin, not the slab."

Hey ANACS, if you need somebody to help you grade your Barber Half submissions, I'm available for the right price! image

I just had my first experience with ANACS. I work in Dublin, so I dropped of 10 Morgans on Friday to get there special. I was impressed. Very friendly, and they were willing to give me a quick review of what the coins would probably grade, along with a few other coins I wasn't even submitting. Having them this close that I can drop off and pick up is a big plus too. I'll let you know how close the real grades come to their estimated grades when I get them back.
