    FWIW:

I have often found that low population PSA 8s do not yield high multiples in PSA 9. The most noted example I can think of in recent memory is the 1955 Bowman #2 Al Dark card. At the time, a 1/5 PSA 8 sold for approximately $650 in a private sale. Two months prior, when the card was Pop. 4 in PSA 8, the 1/1 PSA 9 sold for approximately $800-. So it really depends on the situation - but my experience is that the high values are in the low population PSA 8s, with very little multiple paid upon PSA 8 price for a 9 or a 10.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Jim> I really feel the price for the Gallagher was a fluke. You just happened to find someone who bid foolishly and placed a ridiculous bid way too early. The winner is a serious Giants collector and had he put in a snipe instead of his early bid, I'm confident the hammer price would have been dramatically lower. Your bids easily put an extra $100 in DevilDog's pocket.

Also, the Gallagher isn't easy but it's probably not in the top ten toughest cards anymore. Fourteen PSA8s and three 9s.

    Marc,

You really have a point with your post. Although PSA 9's are much more desireable, there are many more collectors trying to build a PSA 8 or better set than there are people crazy enough to attempt a PSA 9 or better set. Therefore, the premium for a 9 on a card with a low pop 8 will usually not sell for anything close to 5x. If the PSA 8 is solid and nicely centered, it will and should bring in a high percentage of what a PSA 9 version would pull.

The #693 Gallagher card is approximately the 23rd toughest to find in PSA 8 or higher, according to my research list (which is about a month old right now). My list shows 12 PSA 8's and 3 PSA 9's (but that may have changed in the past month).

As I've said before, everything I've researched and projected says that $200 is the benchmark, more or less, for "low pop vintage commons." Beyond $200, its going to be determined by market conditions at the time or sale. Now, that doesn't mean that such a card will never sell for BELOW $200. Again, market forces are always at work. However, all things being equal, an average price of around $200 on these cards should not be surprising to anybody.

  • i really wanted this card because i felt it may be one of the cards that will elude me down the road. the way i see it is that since i'm putting together a set of 8's and 9's there are 15-20 cards that are truly tough in EITHER grade , i count the gallagher as one of them.

the real kicker is that i bid up to 176.00, my wife (god bless her) saw/ heard my frustration and after i left for work she placed the last three bids and yes, she was going to pay for it too!!

i'm prone to superstition and this has every indication of a bad omen , regardless of anything else, i think card 693 will be one of the last cards i need to complete my set.

thanks to all for the INVALUABLE input, despite the naysayers opinions these boards are great!!

    Jim,

I hope this helps - casue when I bought my Gallagher PSA 9 as a 1/1 about 2 years ago - it was $96 on eBay. I can still remember Steve Pekovich grumbling on that one!

But all in all, this one will never stand in the same company as the Schaal IA, Grote or Garrett. I have submitted 3 of the PSA 8's.

Mike is right - Eric Bergen (brg21) is a HUGE Giants card collecter and can be a thorn in your side when you go after those cards because his bids are SOOOO high. He did the same thing to both me and EO when we bid on a Dick Dietz IA in PSA 9. BRG21 won it at $226. Then a week later - Eric won one at $140+. Now I'm waiting for mine...

Also - if you look at the bidding - if you took brg21 out of the bidding - you would have won the card for $94.48. Next one that comes up will probably go that way.

Lastly... there are a TON of invoices still sitting at PSA awaiting grading for the February 1972 to present grading special. Heck... I even know of one invoice that was checked in on 3/16 that I am SURE has a #693 Gallagher on it. Hopefully, that one comes back as an 8. And if it does... I'm sure that something can be worked out with the owner...image

  • Frank,

I dont know if you have the #478 Checklist in PSA 10, but I just listed one on ebay Sunday with a bunch of other PSA 9 cards from 1972.

Sorry for the SPAM guys, but the discussion was there for the taking.

Jim> I have a few cards going to PSA this weekend. There's a McRae IA that is really nice. . .and a Wayne Garret that should make an 8. I'll let you know how they turn out.

    Jim,

Appreciate the mention on the #478 Checklist - but yes... I have that one.

    Other Jim,

Its probably a crap shoot when it comes to the Gallagher. There are certain cards that I will send in that MIGHT NOT be dead lock 8's in my mind. But, they're worth the gamble to see if I get the 8. This last invoice included a Gallagher, Grote and an Expos Team. I think that they were all close - but they went out a month ago and I really don't remember. So - I have my fingers crossed too.
