Mix of crappy and great:
Crappy:
1891 morgan MS61
1921 morgan MS63
1872-CC 50c AG3 cleaned, light bent
Great
1852-O $2 1/2 VF30 (I though this one cleaned for sure) !!!
1916-S $20 MS63 (it was BB by NGC for improper cleaning which was complete BS IMHO)
1913 T1 5c MS64 (double profile listed on the holder, really cool looking)
Really cool
1910 5c PF62 obverse lamination !!!! really cool and scarce proof error

  • Mind if I ask... why in the world did you submit to SEGS?

I was wondering the same.... image

  • You mention on one that you think it's clean... SEGS doesn't have the best reputation for not holdering problem coins...... if you have problem coins, they should at least go to ANACS... ANACS is much more respected than SEGS is...

  • Never submit ANY coins to any of the following services:

    NTC
    ACG
    SEGS
    ACCGS
    PCI
    SGS

    Why?

Because coins holdered by the aforementioned services have a rep for holdering problem coins, overgrading, and bring less money in the market.

If you want the most money when it comes time to sell coins, please send them to PCGS,NGC,or ANACS.

  • And where do you rate ICG....Inquiring minds want to know......

  • Sad should be able to send his coins to any grading company he wants. Seems like decent results. Hope they really arent cleaned.

SEGS is a good grading service IMO-better than ANACS. Don't let these negative opinions dissuade you.
  • I disagree... I would take ANACS and ICG any day over these other 3rd tier grading services. Even ICG, which is known for it's gross overgrading, is better than SEGS...

  • Hmmm. Well, I just got taken by a cleaned SEGS coin in a holder that didn't mention cleaning, so I'm not feeling too friendly towards them right now.
  • ALWAYS submit your Jefferson nickels to SEGS. Don't know about any other denom...

Well, lets hear some other specifics. I would imagine even the "big boys" occasionally get a cleaned or artificially toned coin in a slab by mistake. To compare SEGS with PCI, NTC or ACG is absurd. I slabbed with ANACS for 10 years and can objectively say that SEGS does a better job of grading and attribution-none of this "Doubled die obverse" stuff with no further attribution at all.

totally, just plain RUDE to assume that sadysta1 doesn't know what he's doing.

i say: good job & congrats! what matters is whether YOU are happy or not.

A few members here don't seem to understand that SAD is very experienced in coins.

Many use SEGS for lower grade and/or unusual items because the slabbing fee is reasonable, the slab itself is nice (maybe the best IMHO) and the service is good.
  • jtwax....that slab STILL wont bring the money that PCGS will....perhaps (depending on date/mm/#steps) not even as much as a six stepper in NGC (alluding to moderns here). Actually, now that I think about it, why wont some 5 step Jeffs in SEGS cross to PCGS (such as the '53-S with 5 steps that was making its rounds on the Bay of EEE, where the seller came right out and SAID it wont cross, and any Jeff collector that uses ebay DEFINITELY knows which one I am talking about)...it would seem to me that if both use the same grading standard, 5 steps is still 5 steps.... can you clear this up for me jtwax??? Thanx

Why do I send coins to SEGS? I love their slabs is one of the reasons. They grade all the coins (even problem ones) and they are very forward putting additional info on the hoder (varietes etc.). Sometimes they put info on the holder that even I missed.

I do not do ANACS for two reasons:
    1) I takes too long.
    2) I hate their netgrading

Coins that I usually send to SEGS are the bodybags from PCGS/NGC, coins I'm sure about and/or lower quality coins. As far as comparing their grades to PCGS - it was always with one point or right on the money when crossed to PCGS. As far as people complaing that "oh cracked out SEGS holder and it came back cleaned from PCGS" well I recall a couple of times when people cracked PCGS holders and it came back cleaned from PCGS. If you want to lower your risk don't crack frigging slabs and cough up $15 for "cross at any grade"

I agree with J Taylor, SEGS is the ONLY choice for Jefferys image

could care less about the rest.

Won't bring the money a PCGS slab will? Depends on who you deal with. Trashing a second (or even third) tier slab is just another way for some dealers to make an extra buck on those who can't or won't grade the COIN, not the HOLDER. (I know, I'm being a little redundant with this statement, but I'll say it again anyhow.) Deal with honest and ethical dealers (admittedly, sometimes kind of hard to find) and you should come out OK regardless of the holder in most cases. ICG also seems to get brutal treatment here-maybe deservedly so on their modern stuff, but I've seen many properly, even conservatively graded older coins in ICG holders.
  • Well, in my case I did say cross at any grade.

here we go again. again, there's that certain contingent of plastic-blinded fools who's instant reaction to a thread like this is "you won't get your money's worth".

as if $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ is the ONLY thing everyone cares about???

the guy LIKES SEGS HOLDERS! that's enough for me. maybe he JUST DOESN'T CARE THAT THEY WON'T BRING THE MONEY THAT PCGS DOES?!?!?!

geez, can you people see anything else through your plastic coated glasses other than $$$ signs?
