The HYPE keeps growing

nankrautnankraut Posts: 4,565 ✭✭✭
Some sellers keep adding new "descriptive adjectives" when offering coins for auction/sale. Personally, most of this hype turns me off. From now on, I personally will not bid on/buy a coin which includes any of the following adjectives in the description:
"delicious, blinding, flat-out, unbelievable, world's finest, dripping with, found in my grandpa's dresser, never touched, drop-dead gorgeous, unbelievable, I don't know anything about coins, but...ad nauseum. You're invited to add to this list, 'cause I now have indigestion and must stop. image

"perfection" to describe coins that are not MS/PR70. That turns me off.

I heard they were making a French version of Medal of Honor. I wonder how many hotkeys it'll have for "surrender."

    "crackout candidate"
    A MS63 that "should be in a 65 holder"
    "You are bidding on"
"A xx% restocking fee will apply to all returns"
"no return on professionally graded coins"
    "monster"
    "neon"
"negative feedback will be left if you don't pay in xx days"

Buy the coin, not the description.
Seems to me you are limiting yourself. Might miss a nice coin because of a pet peeve. What's next? I won't buy from a bald coin dealer.
Granted, hype is "sometimes" done for a reason. But not all the time. Some people are just enthusiastic.

none of these descriptions are new to ebay, theyve been there for years.

  • Its all about the marketing.......Sizzle plus steak + $$$$
  • The "hype" is inversely proportional, that is, the greater the hype, the crappier the coin.

    Inversely Proportional

Two quantities y and x are said to be inversely proportional (or "in inverse proportion") if y is given by a constant multiple of 1/x, i.e. y=c/x for c a constant.

The latest irritating hype that has spread like wildfire in listings for "mint sealed" 1964 sets since eBay introduced sub titles:

MAY CONTAIN KENNEDY HALF WORTH $9600!

I like to eMail these sellers and ask if I can return the set if I don't find a Kennedy worth $9600. image

  • "beautifully toned..." "unusual toning..." "fantastic blues,greens,yellows,purples,blah,blah,blah....'especially when used by the well known numismatic auctioneers.

Godzilla, monster, killer, moose, wonder coin (no offense, Mitch),

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

  • My least favorite is "L@@K!".

Actually, there is nothing wrong with accurate verbal descriptions of a coins

appearence. The problem is that the terminology is used so often and is exaggerated

to such a degree, that the beneficial effect of said descriptions become minimal and a real turnoff.

"almost perfect, should have been a, white, I am not a collector or grader but," And can I add one more thing? I see hundreds of auctions with images of coins that are not clear or only have one image and people kill each other to bid on things they can't see. Yet the seller who has great images and descriptions is lucky to get two bids? I am not saying that it's this way all the time but as of late it's what I am seeing. Lousy imaged coins going for big money....I fail to understand this image
  • There is nothing wrong with using adjectives such as the ones mentioned in this thread to describe coins that deserve them. The problem lies with people who abuse these words. Some sellers just have monster coins! What are they supposed to say? Make your purchase based on the merits of the coin itself, not the description.

  • ONES I HATE THE MOST:

    1. Estate
    2. L@@k. (Real turnoff, what does @ have to do with look?!?)
    3. Monster
    4. May contain peanuts.
    5. Gold found!
    6. Lifetime authentication guarentee. (Lifetime refers to the life of the company, not your life, not their life, so if they're a crappy company and only around for a few months and they shut down, poof, your warranty is gone. Your coin is a fake)

  • Inclusion of the needless "U S" to keyword spam anything with an S mintmark...

Or similar things like "1916 no D mercury dime" or "1908 Wish it were an 1877 Indian cent"

Of course, these are usually accompanied by "L@@K!!!!!!" "WOW!!!!!!!" and those sorts of things...

    These really get my goat...
  • I dont mind a word or two, but these people who write a book about why you should will them your estate are a joke! Dont these people have anything better to do? Reminds me of some of the posts here, they talk alot but dont say anything. Keep it short and sweet!

How about this one, "I recently sent this coin in for grading and truly believe it to be a higher

grade, worth thousands. I'm having some serious second thoughts about cracking it out and re-

submitting it and therefore may end the listing suddenly and without warning if I have a change of

heart!" What a feeble sales-pitch! Once you lose credibility-you're done!

Right! If the seller truly believed that he or she wouldn't have listed it to begin with. Some major

players are the biggest phonies and must think all people with lesser sets or no sets at all are

complete fools! They use their reputations as selling tools.

Sooner or later they'll slip up, get caught in a lie and be exposed for what they are...two-faced

hypocrites and they will be made to feel the sting of public humiliation because of their egoes.

    Terms I HATE:

    PQ
    Full mint bloom AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
    NEWPS
AU/UNC: Hey, either it's AU or UNC...DON'T BE A COWARD FACRISSAKE! COMMIT!

I won't even LOOK at auctions with these terms in it. Also, terms like "CH GEM BU" and the like are for those sellers who either do not know how to properly grade a coin or those whose purpose is to use terminology so nebulous as to confuse the potential buyer while not committing to a true grade.

    Just my eversohumble opinion.

    Cheers,

    Bob
