OT: an in-depth look in to SGC's financial records

just kidding.

but seriously though, i've been reading through the SGC boards recently. probably 75% of the topics revolve around PSA. it baffles me that PSA always seems to be the hot topic of discussion on the SGC board.

i never see our members sitting around talking about SGC cards or their company, so why do they always talk about us? and most of the conversation isn't about PSA, it's just sophomoric attacks. isn't there enough going on in the SGC world to discuss? Greg/BOTN seems to be the main instigator, and even their moderator gets in to the act sometimes. i guess it's too much to expect for the forum moderator of a rival grading company to be at least somewhat mature.

i have nothing against SGC or their company; in fact, i think they're great. i just dislike a few of the guys on there who seem to thrive on talking smack and starting rumors about us

  • I have a high regard for the SGC product, from grading standards, to attractive holders, to customer service (please spare me exception stories about submissions gone array considering the 1000's graded.) For some cards I prefer SGC, for others PSA.

However, I have to agree that the SGC boards have too many anti-PSA posts. In most industries the one on top of the hill doesn't spend too much energy on comparisons to the chasers, or too much time on negativity. There's a fine line between pointing out the areas of improvement of a quality product like PSA, and between justifying money spent on a competitor like SGC.

Envy is usually at the root of such sentiment (on a more philosophical note it's the deadly sin that's the foundation of the other six deadly sins.) Not saying that SGC posters would rather have PSA cards, but most probably wish that SGC is in the position of PSA, i.e., marketshare, resale value, etc.

The SGC grades and cards are good, some of my collector friends are big fans and I respect their opinion, but to have two certain guys constantly posting and crying, it turns me off.

i never see our members sitting around talking about SGC cards or their company, so why do they always talk about us?

people love talking about the Yankees, not about the Twins.

  • The reason SGC isn't talked about over here is the same reason Coke doesn't slam Pepsi but Pepsi will slam Coke. Same with MCD and Burger King. #1 never talks about #2. #2 has nothing to do but talk about #1. Next thing we'll see is the SGC challenge.

I am not trying to badmouth the SGC fourm, as it is sometimes a good source of information, but does it get more than three new entries a day?

I have known Sean the moderator of the SGC forum since 1999 or threabouts, I do not think that the bashings of a few disgruntled former PSA dealers represents his viewpoint nor any sort of official SGC mantra. In our conversations, he is respectful of PSA, just as Joe O. has been in similar discussions regarding SGC.

If I was a sportscard dealer and had gotten the boot from PSA, I might find it neccessary to try the same desperate tactics.

I don't see the need for all the us vs. them stuff.

Personally, I use both PSA and SGC for my collection at this time, and the things being said on either message board have had little bearing on that choice. Both companies do a reasonable job at what they do on most days ..............
.............and both need to improve on a number of issues.

edited to add: after all it's not like they're in the brain surgery or astro physics business.

I learned early on in my career that using negative selling tactics (i.e., don't buy from our competitor. They suck) is not a good marketing tactic. I think SGC has a quality product but I think all the anti-PSA talk on their message boards does more harm than good. Just like negative topics on the PSA forums damages the way people view these message boards.
  • Has the SGC website been down since Saturday? I haven't been able to get on to see what's new over there for a few days.

I know it has been down since sunday evening...could have been earlier, but sunday was the first time that I checked...and is still down. Kind of funny that a thread about that board got started when it was down.image

I thought I'd now give a serious response after some thought.

I can't comment for everyone on the Sgc board. For me I consider it similar to a comparison to
Don Henley's "Dirty Laundry" song. People just stop and look at accidents and like to see the
bad scoop going on around one's life. Psa has offered quite a bit to read about, comment,
or shake your head on over the last few month's. I guess for me it's just my nature to see what
    now....

    Aconte,

Is SGC still up and running? I have two large submissions over there right now and I hope everything is ok. Hopefully its just the website that is down.

  • Just called SGC. Got a recording saying business hours were 8:30-4:30 or something.

Slight panic since it was mid-morning.

Called back a while later and got someone (male voice) who confirmed website was down but expected it to be back up sometime. No comment on other aspects of business.

Thanks Toppsgun. I just called and apparently its business as usual at SGC. The guy on the telephone confirmed receipt of both my orders. Good thing too.....these were two of the largest orders I ever sent to SGC. Didn't want them to go the way of SCD before I got my cards back.

About 10 days ago I was told by Scott Hirsch of SGC (your annonymous male voice in all likelyhood) that they were preparing to launch a new web site, with some big improvements to the pop. report elements. He said in the meantime, no orders would be logged onto the old site, and that it might go down soon (not sure why one has to be down to construct the other).
I doubt it was just talk, as we discussed a few issues that needed to get straightened out.

From what I can see, there is little to worry about.
In fact I was told they are very busy from the specials they ran last month, and none of the current staff have alternate employment plans.

edited to add disclaimer : this is just what i heard from them, not Gospel written on stone tablets
