  • Ouch. That is terribly overgraded. G-6 in my book.

I concur G-6, even an 8 would be pushing it.

Nope. From what I've seen, it does appear that PCGS is often generous when grading 1916 SLQs.

Quite possibly. It's a key date coin in a PCGS slab and even if it is overgraded, there are still a number of collectors and dealers who buy plastic rather than coins.

Dont trust that picture. Check the difference on this one from small to large version.
  • i'd say they got the grade about right..the reverse obviously picks it up

No. I do not agree with the grade and I find the opening
bidding on that coin to have been ridiculous at $6200 plus $$$.
I bought a really nice one in an EF 45 NGC holder appox. one
year ago. Paid $5500. RETAIL dollars for it. Saw the coin rise up
$2000. in 6 months and I sold it. I am sorry I did, but I have owned
1916s in grades up to 64 FH and have never seen the prices
that are being quoted these past few months as being realistic.

I'm looking at my ANA grading book (third ed.) and the coin appears no better than VG8 overall. The obverse may not even be VG but the reverse looks to be solid VG.
    All glory is fleeting.

hey placid, that heritage vg-10 looks at least 1 grade higher than the teletrade f-12!

PCGS grading of 16 SLQ's are ridiculous. They are way to liberal with this date. This coin looks G-6 at best. Date is hardly dicernabale, not to mention and ugly coin. The 16 prices are super inflated, along with several other. Fact is, the demand right now is very strong, but in actuality, thier are quite frequently available in just about any grade you want if you want to pay the prices being asked today.
I know of several people from talking with other dealers, that are sitting on several specimens, waiting for the peak in prices.

If you are going to buy one now, then definitely get a nicer looking correctly graded coin. Just MO

If you are in the market of 1916 SLQ, then you know the 16-P has a different grading standard compared to 17-P grading standard.
Nevertheless, the 16-P is over-graded, IMO.
