Less common coins

They made 484,000 1909-S-VDB Lincolns
They made 852,5001877 Indian Cents
They made 264,000 1916-D Winged Liberty Dimes
They made 72,664 1901-S Quarters

Those are considered key coins and some consider them rare. This 1861 three dollar gold piece I just picked up on eBay had a business strike production of just 5,959 coins. Significantly fewer then any of those "rare" ones, yet is considered a common date. Who else has pictures of coins that they own with a lower mintage in a business strike coin?

Nice pick-up. I really like $3's. This is one that I own. In 1883, there were just 900 business strikes.

Survival is the key to real key-dates. Doesn't matter how many you started with if only a few survived. It's just the opposite for 09S VDB, didn't make too many, but most survived and is by no means rare. I have a 1853 half cent that they only made 120,000 and it's a common date.

1831 Half-Dime, 1,240,000... and a "common date" but survival is low with such a small coin... especially undamaged pieces... and there are no "key dates" in the series... Just key die marriages... this is an R-1 Marriage...

Sad part is almost every modern business strike commem has mintages lower then the keys you have listed. Survival is the key figure to look at though. Maybe someday if silver hits $50 an ounce, my raw modern commem set will be worth a small fortune.

The rarest coin I own has a mintage of 343,500 a $10 indian AU-58. Not too rare but hey I got it for less money than a less rare 09-VDB and considering the mass gold melting the survival rate is probably much lower than that of the 09-VDB. Cant compete with a 3 dollar gold peice thats for sure.

1850 Large Cents @ 39,812 with only one year lower by a couple k in the (1840-1857) series,, Oppps didn't meet the question asked, sorry.

Just curious...if that coin came up for sale, what do you think a rough asking price from a dealer would be?

My 1883 is same holder/grade and ex-Norweb, so cost a bit more.

No picture, but I've got an 1867 three cent silver in AU of which only 4000 were made, and most believed to be melted at the mint.
