Help needed on strange Gretzky

Hey all, I'm going through a bunch of my old hockey cards and grouping some into lots for auctioning off. I've come across a strange Gretzky card, hoping one of you can help identify it.

The front has the same hologram from the Upper Deck 1991-92 Award Winners AW1. However, the corners are rounded rather than square, and the back is blank. Any ideas?

  • i would be willing to bet that its from the McDonalds UD set from the same year. whenever i find my big beckett in the mess of my room, ill let you know for sure.
  • Is this the card? Gretzky AW1

Goudey, the card is pictured in that auction is not AW1. AW1 is the Art Ross Trophy card from the Award Winners set - that set has square corners. The card pictured is for the Lady Byng trophy, and has rounded corners.

goodriddance, I think you're right. If you could confirm, it would be appreciated.

    Thanks!
  • unnumbered, blank backed holograms (numbered "H1" for reference purposes) are found in the 1991 UD Mickey Ds set. thats probably what this is.
  • oh yeah book value =$4

Looks like our suspicions were wrong, GR.

I've located a full set of the 91-92 McD's including hologram cards, and they are indeed round-cornered and blank-backed, but they feature different pictures than the Award Winners insert set, and do in fact have numbers on the front (McH-01, McH-02, etc.) as well as the golden arches logo.
  • this is gonna bother me all afternoon. it might be a French Variation (?), or maybe a factory set variation?
  • phreakydancinphreakydancin Posts: 1,691 ✭✭
I don't think I ever bought any French product or factory sets. This card has been in my possession for over 10 years, and the memory has faded, sadly.

Oddly, the UD logo on the front doesn't even feature the year like most UD cards. There is no copyright date or anything.
  • What do you mean book value $4? Do they really have a value?. I give these away to kids to stick somewhere and have a whole bunch of these old MacDonald packs around somewhere.....

Were there any hologram inserts in the UD Czech set?
    Who is Rober Maris?

bingo, there are two unnumbered Gretzky holograms listed at the end of the set. it's probably one of those
  • Bingo, indeed!

I showed the card to a collector friend today, and he confirmed it is from the Czech set. Thanks all!
  • BTW, here is the completed auction... I do have a scanner, I was just being lazy :-D

goodriddance, please PM me... I have 2 McD sets from 91-92, complete with holograms, and I'll part with one for you... I have no idea of the value, but I'm sure we can work out something fair.
  • K, now that we've got all that sorted out, can someone advise if I should be wary of my first bidder?

New account yesterday, has bid on 22 different card lots already...
