I have heard nothing but displeasure

about the new nickels. Was anybody at all happy with any of them? Hearing and reading all the negative comments about them has heightened the disapointment for me as I was looking forward to having some good ones like so many others here.

edited to add the word heard in the title. Before this gets too far along. I don't actually have any of the new nickels as yet and I guess hearing all the negative stuff has taken some of the shine off. What a difference one word makes when missing.image

I don't like the idea the use the design of the Jeff commem for the rev. but it is nice they did something with it.

I was, and still am, happy with them. They are a nice design change and certainly more interesting than another year of the same. While we may pine for the wonderful designs of the past, those days are gone. No longer will artistic freedom reign amongst a sea of political interests.

I'm actually somewhat pleased with them.

A new design, with another on the way.

The way I look at things, any change is positive, cuz I'm sick and tired of the old design.

I recently bought several rolls from a board member (he honestly warned about the lack of quality, especially

on the Philly releases. This made me keep my eyes open when I visit other shops, to see what they have

in the way of rolls. I just picked up a P&D bank wrapped roll from a regular dealer that I know, the coins on

both ends of the roll are really clean (unusual for a bank wrapped roll, usually they have scoring from the

rolling machine). I keep wondering if I should break the rolls and search or just keep them as potential

    "gifts".
  • With they way the quailty is it is going to be a real find to even get a MS 67 or higher.

A 68 or 69 will be crazy money.

I can't wait to see a nice proof to see the design detail that was expected.

  • I like the new nickel reverse. My daughter is studying the American westward migration and was very happy she could bring in a new nickel to show her classmates. I'm also happy for a change.

I also like most state quarter designs. It seems I am in a minority around here but I find all new designs interesting at the least and the best ones are beautiful.

  • Lucy......

I agree the new nickels in a high MS grade will
be a tough find. My search of 1000 coins and not
finding ONE that was anywhere close to a 66 was
    not cool.

I have given up on the bags, hopefully there will
be some nice finds in the mint sets. I think I will
get at least 100 of them.....the hunt is on.

    Lucy, Dave, Michael,

I bought a $100 brinks box two weeks ago, looked through every single coin closely to try and catch a few High MS coins, Nothing. The best grade I saw was 66 at best. Nothing higher. I saw a couple of coins that looked 67 on one side, then the other side would be horrible. Marks, nicks, clutter, and bag friction to say the least. There were a trmendous number of coins in the 61-62 range.

I agree, until some start coming available High grade specimens should do well at auction.

After looking through that box of nickels, know I know why I dont like moderns.

There is not often much variation in quality during a production run any more. That is
the coins made on the last day of issue will look very much like the coins made on the
last day of issue. The design to be used later this year may be far higher quality.

There can be a huge difference in quality between regular issue and mint set coins and
this difference usually favors the mint sets.

The new design is certainly interesting because of the multitude of medals on which it
has appeared. The upcoming one is fairly attractive.

  • I got 2 rolls at the bank and all the rims were nicked.
  • Yup.... it is gonna be tough with the nickels this year. But whoever wins the prize will sure be one happy soul. Many hardcore collector will spend sleepless nights going through rolls of those things. You can tell how much they like to collect by how red their eyes are. image

Another coin that constantly itches in the back of my mind is the 1996-W Dime. Why I do not know, but it just does. That thing got picked out of those sets so fast it was not even funny.

I am still moaning over why thy didn't just take the golden dollar and put the St. Gaudens design on it..... even in low relief it is something we can all be proud of.

Those are my 2 cents, but they are still not worth a dime......

I like the new designs, I just disliked the political lobbying that guaranteed the return of the Monticello reverse.

sounds like mint sets are where they are at, if at all...
the design of the rev. to me is artistically a big step backwards.

As far as the design goes, I give it a image
  • I dig the new design and welcome that change, but look at it this way, these are only for one year.
