I'm so glad to see that SGS, America's Grading Service, is branching out from moderns into older US issuesimage

"With your Mint State Graded SGS Slabbed Coin, you will also receive an Official Certificate of Authenticity certifying the authenticity of this COIN and guarantees such for the full purchase price for the life of this COIN"

Now I wonder as to the veracity of this statement when it comes time to call in the guarantee...

    "SERIAL 42SM70"

How creative... I wonder how they thought it up

Maybe we're being too hard on them. Perhaps they don't grade according to ANA standards but to their own -- like a certain other company. Maybe their grading scale starts at 69 and 70 only indicates a moderately decent coin? I guess someone should ask if they grade to ANA standards or their own...

I don't think anyone did until the Charlote ANA show last year. image
  • Just curious. Does anyone know much about SGS ? What grading standard do they use ? Seems like most, if not all, of their stuff is MS70 ?? By the pictures they sure don't look it. I haven't seen one yet that looked good enough to even consider bidding on.

  • ANA: If you can't see any imperfections under 20X magnification, it's MS70.
SGS: If you can't see any imperfections from 20 feet away, it's MS70.

The price is right. That's what a real MS70 would go for, isn't it?

It's a shame it doesn't have the FS designation. That would be two bonus points in the SGS registry set. image
