COIN WORLD ARTICLE ON NON-LEGAL COINS

SteveSteve Posts: 3,312 ✭✭✭
The April 19th issue has a front page story about howNational Collectors Mint has produced a so called legal coin for our US Territory, Northern Marianas. Coin World is rather critical of this and Beth Deisher wrote an editorial about the related topic of copies of original coins being made by these so called private mints without using COPY on the coin. This whole thing became very interesting to me when I looked at page 75 of this same issue and found an ad from the National Collectors Mint adverising 1936 Proof Sets!. Read it and comment, please. I'm not surprised. NCM gets around the hobby law by not having the denomination on the coin so it's not an exact copy thus exempting it from the law. I believe the mint busted them several years ago for misrepresenting their products. I think the mint should have a talk with them as there are many people who are buying these products thinking they are mint products. And when you consider the NCM packaging looking very similar to the mint's packaging, it's a clear case where the mint should act.

    Yeah, I noticed that also.

Coin World should act, too. It's apparent they've been bought off by their advertisers. image

The least they could do is not editorialize that certain kinds of advertisements should be illegal if they're going to accept them. image

Check out page 49 of the May 2004 issue of COINage for their full page ad for "a limited advance striking of our....51st State Quarter as a 100 Mil Pure Silver Proof for only $5.95!" They've jumped the gun on the Mint by offering a "state quarter" for Washington, D.C.

nwcs: I don't know about all of their other offerings, but this one has "QUARTER DOLLAR" as plain as day on the obverse. image
