Whitman folder advice

I finally broke down and bought some Whitman folders for the state quarters (I guess finding my old folders reminded me how fun pulling coins out of circulation is). It reminded me how tough it is to get these coins into the holes -- my thumbs still hurt from forcing them in. Does anyone have any advice to get coins in these folders easier?

The butt of a pool cue using a circular motion on the rim of the coin (preferably a pool cue that you can unscrew th upper and lower halves apart.

  • That's a tough one. I always had trouble with those. I found the least harmful way to do this is to let the folders warm up in the sun somewhere in the house. This will make the folder expand thus making the cardboard more plyable. Don't use a hammer!

Fortunately once you get one in it won't be a problem anymore. When you switch it for
an upgrade the hole will have expanded a bit.

If you have to get one in and it's really tough you can put one side in and bend the folder
slightly away from the side you put in. Then push down with one thumb while backing the
folder with the other. This won't always work either and there is some danger of creasing
the folder. With new folders now I'll fill them with old very worn dimes or quarters until the
hole expands enough to accept less worn pieces.

I always got a nickel or something and worked the outside edges. But then I found I hated it and got a double sided album (with sliding plastic sleeves) and stopped worrying about it. image
