PCGS Results....Is the MS 68 really worth what PCGS says it is??

I finally caved in and decided to try slabbing a few of the nicer coins that I have stored away, mostly with the hopes of seeing if my grading is in line with the "pros", but of course also in hopes of getting back some good results..........I sent in some coins from the following lincoln rolls...1928......1935.....1939-D....1939-S.....1942-S with the highlites listed below.........

Is the PCGS value of $9,000 for the MS 68 1939-D realistic...If so, how do they determine these values??

PCGS Results:

Two PCGS MS 67 Red 1928

Two PCGS MS 67 Red 1935

Six PCGS MS 67 Red 1939-D

One PCGS MS 67 Red 1939-S

Four PCGS MS 67 Red 1942-S

One PCGS MS 68 Red 1939-D

The online pop report shows its a pop 6 coin with none higher.
    Heritage has never sold one.
The last 67rd that Heritage sold went for $92.00.
$92-$9,000 seems like a big jump to me.
Pcgs is supposed to use auction results. When none exist maybe they make a guess.
When it comes down to it it's only worth what someone will pay and you will accept.
    Congrats on your coin image

As a Lincoln collector I do not think you could sell it for that price. Excelent coin though and congrats on the grades, all registry quality.

Nothing lower than MS67RD? Is that the entire submission? If so, that's kickass!

A pop 6 MS68RD from a competetive series will certainly bring 4 figures. Will it bring $9K--I don't know. Mitch has a good handle on ultra high grade pricing and may be able to help you.

    Editted to add: Congratulations!!

My guess is it could garner $2000 but that's about it.

Your 39-D in 68 could bring good money in a national auction if it is really quality and accurately-graded. I'm confident it would bring well beyond 2K.

I think the results show that you have what it takes to cherry out High end Lincolns. Thats great, many folks dont have that ability.

Congrats on a strong submission showing.

  • Placid...

I agree that it seems like a big jump from $92 to $9000, but with a pop of 6 and so many registry set collectors, maybe it is close...I'm tempted to send it in to Heirtage just to see how it fairs...

    Thanks for the reply...

That is an amazing submission. The MS68 would in a good auction receive bids of (6) figures.I'm sure of that. The top Lincoln collectors would be trying to get it.

I've not opened more than a few of the old rolls and haven't sent anything in, but it is
most unusual to find rolls of this quality. It's so unlikely to happen by chance that one
would guess they were from the same source and the collector cherried them from a
bag or bags. Gems are not common and choice gems tend to be quite scarce.

5 figures is probably out of reach, especially on a pop 6 coin. My gut tells me it will go in the $2k-$3k range. Usually on the top 3-4 buyers pay the moon money, so on pop 6 you are 2-3 coins past that. Still a very cool grade to say the least...probably much harder and rarer to receive an MS68 on a red wheatie than a MS/PR70.
