1960 Small Date - how do they know?

I have seen threads previously about buying "sealed" proof sets, so I am probably going to stay away from this one, but it does raise a question - how does the seller know that this is a small-date set?

  • It's a scam... image I overheard a dealer talking to a guy and the guy had bought a bulk lot of 150 "sealed" "small date" proof sets. But... how can you know they are Small Dates if they have never been looked at... image Every single set was a large date...

  • Thanks. I thought maybe the "1960-P.C." in the lower corner of the envelope might have been a clue. I have bought from this seller in the past and have no reason to doubt him, just wondering.image

I've never heard that anyone could tell from the envelope if the set was a Small Date. If sets are still in an unopened mailing envelope or box with a postmark from early in the year, that could be a clue.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I actually heard once that you could tell either by the tint of the color or by the thickness of the letters on the envelope, but I cannot remember right now. I don't believe it either way.

  • "P.C." could be Latin for "small-date", "parvae calendae" image

"Unopened" '60smdt proof sets? I don't think so. Just another scam job. Besides...IMHO, you shouldn't ever buy something you can't look at. It just doesn't make sense. So-called "unopened" sets can be opened and resealed so as to be undetectable. Also, replacement envelopes are being printed up by the hundreds. I once saw (it wasn't mine, luckily) someone open a "sealed" 1955 FP set that contained a bunch of steel washers.image
