Thanks to those of you who responded to my earlier post seeking guidance on what to do with the coin sets my dad left me. Set forth below is a listing of the items.

All sets are in their original packaging.

1987 Prestige Set Proof (1)
1987 $5 Constitution Coin Gold Proof (1)

1 Full Set 1976 Canadian Silver Olympic Coins (all seven series) in a nifty 70's-style faux wood pullout display case

Franklin Mint Silver Christmas Ingot 1973 (4) (OK, it's not a coin, but it was in the box)

I have no reason to think any of these command a premium on the basis of exceptional quality, but then again, I don't really know. So, what I'd like to do is find a reputable dealer in or near Charlotte to look them over. I would appreciate any suggestions (and thanks to several of you who have messaged me already).

I sure wish your dad would have started ordering from the mint in 1964. image

  • Tell me about it.

Hell, he had 4 Masters badges back in the late 50's because he used to do a lot of business in Augusta and he bought them as a favor--yes, a favor--to his customer. He gave them up when they moved to the midwest in the 60's. By the time they came back to Charlotte, the waiting list was 20 years.

    Talk about your unforgivable decisions....

Scratchy, I really like the guys at Rowan Collectable Coins. (704)-209-3999. They're in Granite Quarry, near you. I also like the folks at Carolina Coin on Two-Notch Rd in Columbia. My guess, based on the list you provided is that particular attention needs to be paid to the 81 proof sets to see whether the half and dollar are type I or type II. Your gold coins need to be submitted for grading, and the other material should be sold raw. They'll be able to confirm that advice if you ask. Good luck!

    Welcome, Scratchy!

Are you interested in collecting, or do you pretty much want to sell off you stuff and move on?

  • I was a collector a long time ago. I still have my coins but they're not worth much--I was a kid. Lincolns, Jeffersons, etc. I'd probably like to sell these and move on.

Ya know, dealers pay 30% back of bid for this stuff and really don't want it.

    Good luck.
The most money I made are on coins I haven't sold.

    Got quoins?

It's not too difficult to get bid if you ship it off. Most dealers in this
area pay 80% bid or more. The '81-S t II cent also brings a premium,
and of course check the '75 proofs for no-S dimes and the '83 for the
no-S dime. Few of these particular sets have varieties but there is
an '81-P quarter with a type "d" reverse, too.

There are a growing number of dealers who pay ask for this material.

  • Is there an internet site that can explain how to determine a TYpe 1, Type 2, etc. on the coins you mentioned, or do I need to go look in a book somewhere? Thanks.

A Red Book by Yeoman should have the different types listed on the sets/coins.

If you have the better varieties, those will sell for a bit of premium, but not a ton.

I'd suggest listing the sets for sale on the BS&T board here. There are plenty of members here that would offer more money than most dealers will offer for that type of material.

I would also look at the Proof Sets for any coins with Cameo or Depp Cameo surfaces. If you check the threads you'll see that they too sell for a premium. I'd be willing to buy the Proof Sets for 10% above bid.
