what's the story behind 1951 topps red back packs

i've seen these come up on ebay more and more and was wondering what the story is since you rarely see packs from the 50s come up- i.e., are they like the 'christmas/rewrapped packs' that people say to avoid?

There was a huge warehouse find of these back in the 80's, and the supply has not dried up yet.

  • but are they legit topps packs? i.e., not repackaged by someone other than topps like the christmas packs/etc.?

Assuming they have not been tampered with, they are legit Topps packs.

  • Check the Mastronet site. They have the "end of the find" listed that does have a brief story of the find. These things are remarkably plentiful.

Wanted: Bell Brands FB and BB, Chiefs regionals especially those ugly milk cards, Coke caps, Topps and Fleer inserts and test issues from the 60's. 1981 FB Rack pack w/ Jan Stenerud on top.
  • These are the most available of any wax pack of the '50's. Blue back packs are another story though.
  • Kinda interesting on these....back in 1985, I bought two supposedly unopened 1951 Topps red backs at a show (for $10 a pop). There's no way these were unopened, as when I opened one of them, one card was creased pretty badly and the other wasn't. I think I would avoid any unopened vintage pack like this unless they were graded by GAI or something.
You spilled WHAT on my 1952 Topps Mantle?!?!?! Doh!!
