Which are prettier: DMPL Morgans or nicely toned Morgans?

I own both, and I'm leaning toward the nicely toned one as my favorite. I just find it more interesting than the white DMPL one.

What's your opinion?

DMPLS, even lowly Ms 63's, 62's and 61's (do they grade them 61?)

The reflectivity thing is a really interesting part of Morgans. You can actually read a newspaper in the field at maybe 8-10 inches or more on some. There were the fresh ones right out of the presses.

I'll go with ANACS' Ultra Deep Mirrors... you know, the ones that have to have 12" of relectivity... image I like em both... and the fact that I own neither, nor can I afford neither... neither way it affects my opinion... but, I enjoy both... image

    DMPLs

    even PLs are nice

however they seem to magnify a coin's blemishes whereas toned coins hide blemishes.

I have a thing for Proof coinage, so it would be PL or DMPL for me.

DMPL takes an instant to create on a coin when it is made. decades of nature's work creates "natural" toning.

Toning is the clear winner when you think about the variables going into toned coins vs. dmpl coins.

Great toning is rarer than DMPL also. I would choose to have the most beautifully toned coin in the world than the one with the deepest mirrors.

I always thought white DMPL coins looked fake.

What proof do you have for this statement?

There are no pop reports for toned coins.

The pops of some dates in DMPL can be counted on your fingers.

DMPL and PL with just a hint of toning, is what I prefer.

JB: That DMPL is quite a dream coin. Perhaps, the ultimate toned Morgan dollar. What makes you think you'll own that coin someday?
  • DMPL's in my book. I lean toward money! That is pretty to me, hehe.

I know that there isn't a pop report on great toned morgans unless you count the (*) on NGC holders. In by which case, NGC has more DMPL coins than (*) coins. At least in the Morgan Dollar Category. If that is any indication of great toning, then my statement is true. I was told that the (*) on NGC coins is to designate the coin as having more eye appeal than is normal for the grade and that applies to toning.

"Who owns that 1881-s (PCGS DMPL66) now?" Well, all I'll say is that the piece looks a lot better in person than it does in that dual scan, where it's appearance isn't too shabby there either. image

I believe a while back this piece went from Mike DeFalko, to Anaconda, and now to you Gemtone65. Congratulations!!!

DMPL's are compelling, but there is a great deal more interest and variety among high-end beautifully toned coins, especially in the Morgan series, where wild rainbow bag-toning, textile toning, end-roll and roll-paper toning join forces with classic album or envelope toning, to create a tremendous palette of extremely appealing coins. I decided some time ago to embark on a long-term project of building a complete Morgan set by date and mintmark. I was choosing between colorfully toned coins and DMPL's. In the end, I chose to pursue the colorfully toned coins. Now I am so glad that I did !! When I lay out the coins I have acquired thus far, they form a dizzying full-spectrum array of different colors, and different types of toning. It is a more interesting group to look at than a bunch of identical white widgets, although surely a full set of DMPL's would be a knockout as well. I think what I like best about the colorfully toned coins is that each one is unique, and has its own personality ... no two are alike !!

And of course, I must agree with everyone who says that DMPL's with wild rainbow color are the best of both worlds !!

    Best,
    Sunnywood
  • Jason,

You could've owned that monster toned PCGS MS66 DMPL 1881-S dollar last year. In fact, you came to my table at Long Beach and looked at it twice before passing. If memory serves me correct I believe you thought my asking price was a bit high. Shortly thereafter Adrian bought the coin from me and I think he sold it (although I could be wrong). In any event, I'm sure it will cost you a lot more today than the price I quoted you a year ago. Just for the record, it is one mother of a coin and you have great taste.

The issue of DMPL vs MS goes further than Morgans. This is really the same as MS vs. PF. And I always prefer the zinging luster of a MS coin over the mirror surfaces of a PROOF or PROOF like. There is just something mesmerizing about luster flow lines with nice attractive color on top! Make mine Mint State...hold the mirrors.
